My post on my recent PDK replacement cost (mine was a refurbished box, replaced under Plan).

"claim was made to replace the PDK transmission. A reconditioned transmission/gearbox was ordered from Germany and finally landed in SA on 28 April (remember the car was booked in on the 11 March). Reconditioned/refurbished parts are called "Porsche Genuine Exchange parts" and are backed by the same warranty as new parts. Cost = R107,633 (that is after 25.5% internal discount)"

well this is the thing man unless one cant use logic with these cars but if it was driving fine how can there be mechanical damage...clutches being damaged i can understand....my mechatronic caused my clutches to burn out because of temp control with a wet system. We changed the mechatronic and car wouldnt drive properly because previous mechanic loaded the wrong software and damaged the new clutch set...i argued that it cant be the clutches as i had changed it..popped another new set of clutches with right software and boom....gearbox sorted. all im saying is youll need the mechatronic replaced anyway why not try fixing it and getting new clutches first before getting a new box...your call.
Believe me, nobody wants to touch that box, tried everyone. ZF definitely does not supply parts. The quote does include labour and the initial diagnosis.

interesting read

That article is a goldmine of information. Also a frustrating read, knowing that the box can be repaired if their was access to parts.

im sure you can get an independent to do it...there are also good mechanics without jobs...the stuff they are talking about replacing is basic mechanics...if you dont mind spending the money its fine...if you do its worth a go.

every specialist told me i cannot take a used mechatronic and transfer it...it hasn't been done and i said..Rubbish..ill show you. Not saying its the same but with some determination you can save yourself from spending some of your hard earned money....thats the price of a lovely time piece haha

Ja, if it really is an R160k+ repair I think at least calling some indy's and seeing what they can do makes sense...

I know a technician in Cape Town who works at Porsche Century City, would you like me to share his details with you? I know he does private jobs, maybe he can help you out or at least give you an opinion. This guy previously worked as a master tech at VW Culemburg and was then offered a job at Porsche, I think it's worth it just talking to him. I know he's also travelled to Germany a few times to do training at Porshe.

Apologies if I missed this, but did you replace the battery? It couldn't hurt to drop a few grand to rule it out.... At 9 years old it's almost guaranteed to require replacement either way, especially with the cold weather lately.

Definitely not the battery as I initially hoped. I've exhausted every option. I do know that there are some parts made in China but they are of dubious quality. Anyway, I can't get anyone who can confidently say they can diagnose and open up a PDK box.

Is this conclusion based on the fact that you replaced it and it didn't help, or did someone run a diagnostic test and confirmed that the battery was fine?

I'm pretty sure the Porsche mechanics did test the battery and ruled it out as causing the fault

Unfortunately unless their diagnostic machine says “replace battery” they will not even look at it.
Anyway hopefully you manage to get sorted soon man.

If you are willing to have the car parked off for a while, I would get a good gearbox tech to strip the box. This looks more like an electronic failure than a mechanical failure. Perhaps strip, see what can be seen, test actuators, etc and if you find something wrong, then try to order from overseas. Worse case, you waste a bit of time and labour costs. At least then, you know you tried everything, before forking out R160k.

Try and get them to pull the gearbox out at your house, so that the car is at least parked off by you and not in a workshop.
