discussion BMW X3 Mzansi Edition (2021)

I am speechless on this one...

BMW X3 xDrive20d Mzansi Edition R1 012 938

Over R1m for a humble 2.0d (140kw/400Nm) 4-pot with a fancy M-Sport kit and some extra bits and bobs.

For goodness sakes, this car is made locally and this is the best package that they could come up with at this price?

To add further insult, a new LCI X3 is being launched soon.

A bare bones X3 30d is "only" R130k more and gives you so much more in the engine department.

BMW could have at least added the 20 inch wheels for a car that costs over R1m, but no, they fit the kak 19s.

The sales person will treat you like a peasant for not being able to afford the extra money for better wheels  The stupidity of BMW has become difficult to witness.

So basically at this point the school-run moms and 'I couldn't afford an X5' crew are expected to spend over R1M for a 2.0d 'limited edition' that looks very meh

OR

Buy a brand new base Macan LMFAO Porsche Macan - Porsche Middle East (or one of the vehicles it is based on within VAG), one of the Volvo options etc...

as for it being a diesel/20d? Spending over R1M and simultaneously needing to save money on fuel is just not a problem a normal/rational person has - Diesel sure can be a preference, but then why not use the performance diesel/30d for the limited edition.

They could have rather made a bare bones SA special, with some unique trim bits (think Polo Mswenko).
So, take a RWD 18d (2.0 motor 110kw/350Nm) then fit:
- 17 inch rims
- black plastic mouldings on bumpers and wheel arches
- basic aircon (no climate control)
- halogen headlamps
- fake leather seats (or durable easy-wipe cloth)
- spare wheel
- comfort oriented suspension
- Make the motorplan optional (but warranty and service plan standard)

If they can sell that at R550k, they would have a real winner in the value stakes.
Basically, aim this at the VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI Comfortline 4Motion (110kw/340Nm model - priced at R660k), but cut out the AWD and some features, while taking advantage of the lower costs of making a proudly SA vehicle instead of a full import.

Didn't BMW do this cut-price model thing with the then locally made E90 3 series? - I remember the 320i and 320 "Start" models, which were seen as starter pack models...

I think BMW SA is trying to offload their excess stock as a 'limited edition' to make way for the LCI model.
Its sad that so many 'non-car' people get caught with shitty specc'd cars.

. For much less you can get a used F15 X5 30d or even an M50d with motorplan

A used F15 M50d, and spend the rest of your miserable life with your favourite mechanic and broke, or both. Because let's face it, the seller will never tell you the real truth behind why they disposed it off.

Some don’t want to keep two SUVs
They have to sell F15 to buy the new shape.

Rather live a day as a lion (used M50d), than a lifetime as a sheep (new 20d), some may say...

WTF you have to know ZERO about cars to fall for this shit
Funny thing though, there are a ton of people who know nothing about cars and will buy these things or else VW & BMW would not be Editioning every single bunch of their outgoing stock lol

I saw a video on the one BMW FB group a few weeks back.

It seemed as if someone bought his wife a brand new g20 m-sport and she was loosing her shit all happy and such. Did not even know what the M stood for on the car and had to ask.
From what I could make out though, she was just happy that she got a brand new BMW and to her the m-sport package just makes it more wanted and "fancier".

A lot of people do it simply for the status they feel it provides and to show off. Have the illusion that they are doing well.

These cars are made locally. I don't understand why they have to be priced at the same level as their fully imported competition (Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 have zero export credits to offset against, while Merc could offset some C-Class credit against the imported GLC).

I agree with this.
Is the X1 produced locally?

Reducing the price of the X3 may make some of their other ranges less appealing perhaps?
I dunno.

M50d’s appears to be very much reliable, touch wood! Been 2 years of bliss and no issues whatsoever with my 50d.
