So my Carly adapter thingy finally cleared customs and arrived...

:smilebounce:

I then did the error code reading, to see what the status of my lady was...

The first test showed a few errors with regards the voltage spikes from when my regulator went bye-bye....

I cleared the faults and re-ran the diagnostic.

Was very happy to see no VANOS/Solenoid, blah blah faults...

I only have 1 single error/fault code now... as per below.

:eek:mgwaiting:

Any ideas what this actually is? It doesn't seem serious, but can't find any info on it...

Hmmm, Only 'DA' codes I find on ISYS for that car is from DME, Kombi and GM. Nothing for heating. It might be related to seat heating?

Thank you! I do have heated seats. They seem to be working fine. But could be related to that. I wonder!

Thanks again...

Ok, time for a quick update...

So, I took my beloved Z off to MMS Auto ( @johndoe / Clint) to have the Diff reconditioned, and he did an absolutely supreme job of looking after my girl!
The reason for needing this, was the development of the dreaded LSD grinding, which was getting worse, and even sometimes evident when driving straight, and not even when turning sharp corners.

Whilst at it, we took the liberty of replacing some aged parts that were evident once the Diff and Exhaust were all removed. Mainly the rubbers and some of the bushings, that after 10 years and 160,000km's clearly needed to be replaced.

When I got her back, I couldn't believe how smooth she felt again. And I still need to get some decent tyres fitted, and maybe still do the shocks soon too. These rear tyres are now well and truly &*%#ed.

Thanks Clint - you are the man. I really appreciate your taking such good care of her, and keeping me updated every step of the way.

Some pics of the work... (selected from almost 300 pics shared with me!!!!!)...

Interesting tyre profile...

A bit of grease/dirt from the flange!?

Cracked Guibo (more than evident in the photo)...

More cracked rubbers...

Done and dusted... and then oiled (friction modified BMW OEM LSD oil) and then re-installed...

Some more new rubber parts...

These aged bushing were replaced too...

img_9464_7155269049.jpg

Did the rear brakes while he was at it!

img_9438_6546710217.jpg

And finally... a quick Oil change too! (Liqui-Moly 10w60 Racetech). I left the ceratech for now. But am still thinking of adding some form of friction modifier. Will see...

img_9501_7016834574.jpg

So that's it for now. She was back with me in a no time at all.

Next up will be some new tyres for sure... then probably the shocks (still toying with the idea of Bilstein B6? B8?) and will check what remaining bushes need to get done at the same time. And then of course, absolutely have to check out the valve clearances and perhaps Vanos. All in good time, and once I win more than R25 in the Lotto...

Thanks again Clint! Absolutely brilliant work my man!!!

Very nice dude. She must be running so smoothly now after replacing rubbers and guibos and oils etc.

The old oil filter doesn't even look that bad. Good sign that!

Thanks bud. She's a pleasure to drive, even with some more work outstanding... !

Yeah, this is the first oil change after the ceratec and racetech from when Peter did the great job on the bearings, and it's 10k later now... so glad that it seemed so relatively clean still!

Z4M... the only way to go!!!!

:smilebounce::smilebounce:

It's also funny how the butt dyno and mental games that you go through... but she feels soooooo much better after this...

hmmmm this Ceratec is interesting me now! I need to look into it properly.

I am doing my 3rd oil change on Saturday. Oil should be clean by then.

haha I don't know about it being the only way to go :fencelook:

So what brand tires are you thinking of going with next?

PLV

Well-known member
I am still undecided on the tyres...

Initially was going the Toyo's.... then maybe need to look at the Nexen's... but I am also still keen on the Falken like I have on the X3... I am loving them still...

So time will tell... but it will be soon soon... these tyres are really stuffed now. But they served me well...

3rd oil change... lol... you doing it good and proper!

Would you be able to describe exactly what was replaced in the diff? Was it just bearings and seals, or were the clutches replaced on the LS unit as well?

I have the Toyo's on my car. 19's and I have hit a few serious potholes. Some of the worst I have probably ever hit "other than the one i hit on Witkoppen that wiped out two rims and two tires and sent me off the side of the road back in 2011." And I have no bubbles in my tires and my rims seem to be fine other than a few nasty scratches from the massive pothole I hit on Beyers Naude a month ago that was covered in water.

So in terms of durability the Toyo's seem to be very good. But this is just personal experience with them, I can't speak on behalf of anyone else but For me for such a low profile tire "265/30/R19" to handle some serious smashes into potholes and still be perfectly fine. Makes me think these tires are pretty damn good.

I had a set of Nexen on my 330i I think and they were also very good tires for the price I paid. I am not sure what there performance tires are like though.

For tyres on the Z4M I can't complain about Goodyear Eagle F1s that I've had for about 10 000km or so now.

Thanks man. Yeah, Clint was absolutely top notch!

By the way - I've decided to do the Falken's on the Z too. I have been loving them on the X3... so going to try them out on the Z.

Will be going 275/35R18 on the rear (nice and wide) and then 245/40R18 on the fronts...

Getting a decent price ~R9.9k... where a couple months back it was around R13k. So not bad at all!

Think they will make a huge difference in the ride quality too!

Happy days...

Let us know how the 275's ride ...I put 255's on the rears since it's always what I've had , wouldn't mind going wider if there aren't any issues..

I’ve seen this car in person on several occasions and it’s flipping mint! Look close to brand new!

Very impressive for its mileage! Pete looks after his stuff that’s for sure.
