Ok so got the car back today.
Gearbox was stripped and all parts checked and confirmed to be in pristine condition.
So next the clutch assembly which had seen better days.
Managed to pick up a LUK Clutch from G Drive Automotive for a very reasonable R2800
Additionally I bought 3 liters of Liquid Moly Gearbox Oil

Two days later gearbox is assembled put back in the car and my problems are solved.
No more grinding between gears and no more whining as I gear down.

Clearly my issue was clutch related and not with the gearbox but I now have the knowledge that there's no fault with the gearbox.

Car drives like a new one.

Labour R2000.00
Gearbox Seals R200.00

Total cost to service the gearbox and install a new clutch
R5000.00

R31000.00 cheaper than the quote I got from the stealers.
