So.... apparently the motors are prone to imploding because of timing chains, oil starvation etc.

Mine is sitting on 50k at the moment and the dealer did the full inspection and replaced thermostat. Also remapped the ECU. All under the last bit of the plan.

Apart from oil changes every 5k and the standard services at 10k, what else will prolong the life of the motor for at least the next 70k.

Ps. I drive like grandpa with the occasional spirited overtake.

If you're only going to keep it for another 70,000kms with your kind of driving you'll be fine. If you plan on keeping the car any longer and your car is built before 2015, then a Timing set change would be the best investment you can make. The timing guides and everything else was redesigned for n20 cars built from 2015 onwards. This solved the fragile guides which caused the biggest ceasure issues on this engine. As far as I know it costs just under R20,000 for the timing set change - labour and parts.

Thanks.

I really love this car and putting away some cash every month to do this maintenance is well worth it.

Is the cost from dealers or would a specialist like Tune Tech be best to approach?

I enquired from Budler Motorsport (very good BMW techies) for a mate of mine - R18,000. He got a quote from BMW - Around R19,000. It becomes a preference thing at that point. I'd prefer BMW for the sake of having it on record, which is good in the case of sale. Not sure about tunetech and others.

Thanks so much.

I’ve built up a great relationship with Bedfordview this week. Car was with them for four days diagnosing and fixing a small misfire and brakes. The service was exceptional. Will get in touch with them down the line.

All good bud. I wish you all the best with keeping it in top knick. And congrats on the purchase! I'd love to get my hands on one of these in a few years...

First BMW. I’ve always gone Japanese.

Now I’m really happy. Thanks again for the help.
