A 5er E60 523i has come up with a buddy for sale. I have been looking at these for a bit but wanted a 520D or 530d. Specs:

2007
230 xxx KM
Petrol
Sun roof
Auto

The car mechanically is sound, I have driven it a couple of times and its not bad at all. Will need some TLC on the body as it was being used by a few people and not everyone cares for cars.
I was not moved by this car until the owner told me he can let it go for R40k neg...

Questions: What sort of work do I need to get done if I buy it? I remember a thread were SASH said gearbox will need to be looked at. I am not much of a wrencher so most of the work will be out sourced to someone who works with BMWs.

If I do end up getting it then I will be sourcing Msport body parts for it and wheels.

Is this worth it?

Also fuel? I know its not going to be diesel consumption

@40K i would go for it,

You wont get more car for that money bud, if you not going for it, put me next on the list

Honestly, for the price, i dont think its a bad idea.
I am still new to BMW, but ive been doing my research, and i have an idea now of what to look for and whats worth it and whats not.

I cant vouch for the way the car drives, but judging by your comment of the mechanical justice, id say great.
with having a few people sharing a vehicle, there will always be a few scratches etc, and if you willing to overlook that to slowly do it up as you see fit, then i commend you on that, and i give a big thumbs up and say go for it.

for my little bit of insight, if you think the gearbox needs work, then perhaps (depending where you from) have the gearbox checked with ZF in Meadowdale, they will do a diagnostic and check all is order. they can then advise what should happen going forward, if needed.
regular mechanics can be done at a place of your choice, but there are a few places such as TuneTech for that, (in my experience, rather spend that bit extra on labour at a reputable shop, than one that is not)

then as far as the MSport kits go, build that over time, and you will have a good car.
perhaps someone more knowledgeable may chime in, but that my take on the vehicle.
Tune Tech is willing to give a car a once over as an evaluation for free for a vehicle you looking to buy for peace of mind. (just call and ask for Diba, as i was always assisted by them). they will then tell you if its worth it or not. maybe keep that as an option.

Look if the car is mechanically sound, 40k is a bargain.

Might be a wee bit heavy on fuel, its a big body for a smallish engine to move around. Think of her as a stately cruiser.

Gearbox wise, take the car to ZF themselves. Let them do diagnostics/analysis on the box and they'll advise on the way forward for you.

Personally, I have a high miler 530d. I'll tick over 227k on my way home this evening. They're really solid cars. The interior has worn really well and its a lovely place to be.

At that mileage, have the suspension checked over. I had to do a refurb on mine at 180 000km so its possible the work has been done but still worth looking at.

End of the day, in my opinion. For 40k, its a no brainer

I either need to get married and have kids fast or change my address... is this normal? More than I am paying for a high risk Polo Vivo.

Thats because you're using stupid useless telesure companies. Find a decent broker and see what they can do. I'm paying like 650 for my 530d

What Broker did you use then bud? im getting a 335i soon, and i was quoted 1400 for insurance through King Price, and i need to get a better premium

R40k is nothing for this car. Even if you have to spend another R40k it would probably still be a good deal.:cartel:

Here's your problem. Once again a telesure company. Rip off artists

I agree that it is a good deal.
Things to look at;
- gearbox
- suspension
- cooling system

Consumption is definitely going to be worse than a diesel. You can ask your buddy about the consumption...?

Hippo is not accurate at all when it comes to insurance quotes. Call a broker.

Msport kits look great on the 5er.

I say go for it.

What is wrong with the car? 40k sounds like too little for the car.. O yes and don't insure with any of those telesure places, they don't pay claims you better off keeping your money than paying them anything!

Soooo the beast was collected sometime last week but been busy haven't had time to look at it much.

Took a drive from JHB to Manzini (+400km) via Carolina and back. She is a boat... takes a bit of time to get going but when its on the move the acceleration is smooth and effortless. Have always done the trip in a C220CDI with one tank then I fill up back in Carolina but this car with lots of spirited driving there was enough fuel for one way only. :roflol: averaging about 14l/100km. She will hit 200kph easily and stay there for as long as there is fuel and the road is straight enough.

Personally, this is not the one for me and when an offer was made for twice what I paid for it I couldn't say no. So she has been sold and there won't be a rides section.

its a beast though... okay some pics.

still makes wonder why the previous owner let it go for so little money?

Still can't figure it out as what is currently wrong with it still does not justify his selling price... Maybe it was just my lucky break into BMW
