Two questions Twinz:

  1. Is the unit locked to the car as long as the software is installed to the car? Can you sell it without uninstalling?
  2. Is the mod detectable by Motorplan?

Trust that needs to be clearified for interested parties

Hi Rolf, I think Twinz covered the the 1st point.

Is it detectable by motorplan, I would say no for normal servicing/etc. It does put some form of encryption on the DME so BMW can't do proper diagnostics, but one can uninstall the Cobb to prevent this. As always my golden rule applies. If you as the owner are not comfortable, then leave it stock.

OK that far I can follow.....

Now to the crucial point:
- the OBD port is handled by the ECU's processor which allows access to the flash and coordinates addressing of the maps (else one could not just change a single map but would always have to flash the whole software).
- knowing this it must be noticed that all read and write operations are monitored and logged in the processors internal e²prom.
- this e²prom is not a separate chip
- this e²prom can not be programmed via OBD

In my humble understanding of the materia, BMW will always be able to detect if boost and rpm have been fiddled with should they suspect such thing and connect their system to the car to transmit data to their HQ

Am I wrong here?

Yes they may well be able to see if the flash counter has been incremented (not confirmed yet, but may be the case). No they cannot ever see that boost has been raised unless they drive & log the boost. And they don't have equipment to do that. All their equipment does static diagnosis.

Yes that point was covered by Twinz on his second reply!
No need for further discussions; unit is locked until car is back to standard!

On the "detection point" I will try and verify what you state as much as I can with SMG.

Would be great if it was like that but have a feeling it's not.

Will report back after my return from the Eastern Cape next week

I tell all my customers this before I plug anything. Chances are nothing can be detected. If you have a relationship with a dealer & you going for a service, you probably not gonna' get bothered. If you need to make a claim, it's safer to remove all mods & clear the fault memory.

But, there is always a probability that somehow, something can be detected, albeit it's highly unlikely. If you choose to modify your car, then you accept that there's a chance you can lose your motorplan & that choice is entirely yours. You can choose not to take that chance, & we can go for coffee & part ways. No harm done. But if you choose to take that chance, then it's your car & your call. Tuner's provide a service of tuning but no tune or piggyback can guarantee that it is undetectable.

Eish just imported mine.if only i knew..... :flyfun:

Will you be selling the AP unit as well?

I know some of the international blogs that sell cobb, create a custom map and sell the AP at a premium. WIll you be doing the same?
I.E the Pro E tuner software written by you and installed on the AP.

From a user perspective, the interface is so simple and easy to use, follow the screens and bobs your uncle.

Now that you selling i guess we could expect competitive pricing..

Hi byby, yes we have the Tuner Pro software suite, we will be taking the Cobb off-the-shelf maps & modifying them for our altitude & local conditions & giving our customers the option of running them. We will stock the AP & sell it at a competitive price & provide local support & tuning.

Sherwin i just realised that you would be able to upload an xcede flash on the AP as well (not a cobb file) for customers to use...now that is a cool idea. So the customer can flash or unflash the xcede file as and when they choose in the comfort of their own home.

Great opportunities there

Yeah Twinz, that is absolutely one of the reason we pursued the Cobb authorised tuner route. We can do our own maps & get it onto the the car via the AP. With N54's we can get our tune onto the car with our old Xcede tools or with the Cobb. With N55's we can only use the Cobb. But we can get our specific settings we like & use on cars & get it into the ECU using the AP. And the customer can switch between our maps or the off-the-shelf customer maps. It's his choice.

No fitting wires, breaking connectors, limp modes, limiting control of boost, almost no control of timing, almost no control of fuelling, no VANOS control. None of those issue with Cobb & you get rev limiter per gear, boost per gear, speed limiter removal, whatever you want.

Excellent news. This venture opens up so many opportunities for you across the BMW model range. A good way to start the year. Well done.

Hey
Some quick questions:
Can you run more than one excede map on the cobb? Ie one map tuned for fuel economy and another map for racing etc? Is the maps amount limited?

If I understand correctly with the cobb device when reverting back to stock the ecu is flashed with the stock map, any codes etc can be cleared, but it will show in the "memory" that boost levels/ rev limiter and that the ecu map was changed (Date stamp?)?

Many thanks, sounds like a very cool device.

Howzit Gents,

Is this thread still alive?

What was the outcome of the flash counter on the ECU with the AP COBB Unit?

Gents.

Heard that the MED17 N55 protocol is now open and tools such as Dimsport Genius and CMD port flashing is now able to pull the proper maps SW tuning.

Can someone in the game please find out for me?
