X5 Smoking

Wonder if anybody could give me some advise...My 2003 X5 3.0D just starting smoking heavily and the the dip stick was bone dry. Very confusing because the oil was always on the mark, even after a long trip. The power though seems fine...going to try and refill oil and see...I also have an intermittent problem starting, then I have to move the gear lever from P to D and back a few times and then she starts again.....2003 out of Motor plan so I would need to first confirm the problem before having it repaired...It has only 140 000km (genuine mileage) I checked the history before I purchased the car on 125000km about 6 months ago..

Stop driving it immediately, you are going to run up a serious bill if you do.

Firstly, replace the crankcase breather, it sits on top of the engine, a quick google search should point you in the right direction. If you are lucky, the smoke will stop, and so the oil consumption. If you do not replace it, you will kill the turbo, if it isn't dead already. If she still smokes, you have a more serious problem.

Next suspect will be the turbo. I assume she is idling smoothly?

they have been known to smoke heavy if there are problems with filters Etc....if she has blockages somewhere might do the same thing - but I agree with the others - try not drive until you have diagnosed the problem it might be terminal.

Hi

It's not white smoke, more like dark smoke..I stopped immediately and didn't drive it hard either...but why would the oil dry up then guys....

Dark smoke could indicate either diesel, but then idle would be compromised, or the oil used is not correct. But I have read accounts of dark smoke and it was the turbo that went, probably with the wrong oil. Change the crankcase breather anyway. I would not drive the car at all if it suddenly starts to smoke and use oil, diesel runaway is very bad and expensive. Also change the oil, its cheap enough - use Shell Helix ultra 5w40.

Don't know if this makes any difference, but the engine was changed by the agents, found this out when I was checking out the history on the car before I bought it. They put in a 530D engine...
It is idling fine and the power is still good....

was it a second hand motor...check with the guys who put it in...I think they are exactly the same motors.
Black smoke generally when it has not been services in a long time and filters are bad. Good luck.

Definitely sounds like a glogged crankcase breather valve to me

Hi guys
Just some feedback on the X, apparently its the turbo. The coolers were full of oil.The turbo guys say it was a foreign object like an injector tip that caused the problem. Got the turbo back this morning, should have the car running by Friday 18th. Will keep to updated, if all goes well I think I would have got it done for a pretty good price.

foreign object is more than likely a swirl flap rivet. Remove all the swirl flaps asap, or you will replace the engine right after the turbo (along with the turbo, again).

Hi,

Please let me know if the X3 has the same swirl flap rivets?

Thx

It should also have them (swirl flaps), although likely the uprated ones with the thicker shafts. There have been reports of failures with the thicker shafts, but I believe much less of them...

My brother also has the 2003 X5 3l diesel and it does not have swirlflaps. It is an auto, and we were quite surprised to find out that it did not have the flaps, relieved actually!
On my E39 530d when i got the car 9 months ago, the day i got it i removed the manifold and got rid of the flaps, was actually scared of driving it home from the garage where i bought it because of all the scary tales of swirl flaps coming loose.
