It's simply a remarkable motor... Have one in my f15 and, except when towing, it's the pick of the range from a performance perspective... That is until the x5m is launched...

So what is wrong when towing? I am looking at one for next year to replace the E53 3.0d.

It struggles with a heavy trailer. It really is not geared correctly for towing and it becomes as thirsty as a V8 and starts hunting to keep pace. I would not even try putting a car trailer behind it. Its the reality of high turbo pressure on a relatively small displacement. That being said, the M50d is much better than 3.0d which is simply a poor towing car. If we are going to travel with my 4x4 trailer (1,5 ton) it is much more pleasant to use my 4.8l straight 6 Patrol, which is all together much slower, but has ratios set up better for towing.

Cheers

I tow a 1.3 ton caravan without problems with a consumption of 12 l/100 at 115km/h. I talked to somebody who towed an exclusive with a m5.0d with a consumption of 8 l/100. If you tow faster with all that extra weight it is not safe due to stopping distance.
The X3 3.0d with same carravan gives 7.5 l/100. The diesel X's the best tow cars with performance and consumption.

Last year we towed our massive 4x4 trailer down to Sedgefield( which is between knysna and George) from Centurion using the 3.0d x3 and the car was a absolute beast while towing. Did 150-160 most of the way and ended doing the trip in just under 11hours whith a fuel economy of 11.6l/100 at that speed. To me that is quite good economy considering the speed and the x3 was just an absolute pleasure to tow with. I cant see how people see the 3.0d as a bad towing engine, ours is absolutely brilliant
