X5 cams snapped

Howzit guys.

As the thread title, anybody know of an X5 e53 3.0d that snapped the timing chain. Happened to a mate of mine from work yesterday. Mainly need to know if it would be cheaper to fix or replace the motor. There was a ticking sound after the injectors we're done, but only in Drive, not neutral so we assumed that was gearbox related.

Oddly enough He was just driving along at 120 and motor cut out. Had to be towed obviously. No visible damage from outside but does not sound good when swinging.

Thanks all

You will only really kow the damage once the motor is stripped.. thats when you usually make a call to rebuild or replace.

Howzit, thanks for the reply.

They going to start stripping his car today, but so far 2 cylinders with no compression so we are assuming so far 4 valves, and maybe 2 pistons, but yes. Better to wait and see I guess.

Hi. Thanks for the reply

Yeah the swinging may have not been the best idea but didn't swing much. I assume the pistons were against the valves so yeah. Was more of a response to the car cutting out, as mentioned, no noises or anything when cut out. He assumed it was just a stall. And then the sound on the swinging.

Geez. That sounds like fun. Just making me worry more about the timing chain on the 320d.

For my money I would buy another engine.

Valves are very expensive for those engines as are pistons

Hi. Thanks for the reply.
This does seem like the better alternative at the moment. A few engines available down here for about 35k and from BMW for interests sake for the short engine nothing more, R143 000 excl and that's with the 10k trade in of the old engine. Will see what his mech quotes him tho. Should know tomorrow or so.

Thanks again

Howzit guys.

Thought I would update this in case there are any interested parties, seems the car did not have a timing chain failure, both cams snapped instead so they trying to figure out what caused it. One thing that did come up was diesel knock or diesel lock, couldn't hear properly.

It is a bit funny as the injectors we're fully refurbished 2 weeks prior to this issue so just waiting to see what else it messed up.

Cheers guys

Is that title better?

Thanks.

That's perfect.

Great response time too:smilebounce:

All right, just received annother update

Injector3 was over fueling major,
Injector6 was completely dry
Head is a throw away pretty much,
Cylinder3 bore washed
Piston3 melted

They are stripping the bottom end tomorrow so will hear about the crank and all tomorrow.

Remember, all injectors were completely rebuilt and calibrated 2 weeks ago, all was good. A trip was done up to jhb for a week, then 2 days after getting back to kzn this happened.

Thanks for reading all

Hi guys
Im a bit new here.
I had a similiar issue on my E53 3.0D
Fuel pump siezed
Snapped chain
Snapped both cams
Had the head overhauled for good measure,
Replaced cams, chain kitt, and fuel pump.
Along with tensioners etc.

Problem i am having now is car wont rev pass 3500.
Double checked timing(used a timing tool)
Had injectors tested and recalibrated
Changed various sensors and boost control valve etc
Im at the point of Pulling my hair out.

PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN ASSIST.

also had a bmw fundi come and take a look.
Used various diagnostics, no obvious faults
