X5 3.0D Fuel Economy

Prior to the service the best I got was 9.4l/100km and I thought that was good so am well pleased with the current performance & fuel economy.

That's strange. Unless you had really dirty injectors or something was wrong, it should not have been that much of a jump. Are you sure, it's not because of the difference between city and highway driving?

Either way 8.0l/100km sounds right for the open road and around 9-10 for city driving.

When I had the car serviced last week the guy said the air filter was quite dirty and a new one was fitted. He done an engine flush as well. When I drove down today I used the speedo cruise which I didn't do when I got 9.4l/100km the last time. This may have added to the improved fuel economy.
