x3 rear prop shaft reconditioning

Hi all,

I've been hearing a metallic clunk on my x3 whenever i would pull away and I've always thought its the rubber coupling at the back of the propshaft. Today the mechanics took it off and found that its actualy the u joint on the front of the shaft. BMW wants 13k for a new one :dunnoanymore: Does anyone have an idea where i can take the propshaft for repairs and balancing in Johannesburg?

Does your mechanic not know who to take the prop to for repair?

I remember seeing a post on a gut who does propshafts at a place called mayfair gearbox. Please search the forum to find that thread.

Well I'm not sure about the X3, but I know on E46 it's basically impossible to repair failed U-joints in South Africa, because it requires specialist equipment that no one has. So you might need to pony up for that new prop, or find a used one from a scrapyard that is still in good nick.

I broke the rear joint on my e46 prop. It has a cv joint for the last one. Replaced that with a new carrier bearing and balancing. Its all good.

The rear CV joint is replaceable, but not the U-joints.

Today i called Propshaft Balancing Cv Centre in Rooderport the lady i spoke to said they can do it, i am not convinced but i just wanted to go satisfy my curiosity. I also called Tri Torque in cape town and they said they can do it. Problem is getting it there.
At the moment it looks like it might just have to hunt for a used one in good shape. Any leads?:fencelook:

Hi there.

Just picked up a 2005 2.0 diesel and it had the usual clunking in the lower gears. Mechanic stripped out the rear propshaft and one UJ was totally shot. He took it to a place in Randburg who said they couldn't service the propshaft. After calling BMW and getting quoted R18k for a new one I found Propshaft & CV Joint Empire in Kya Sands.
Mario completely reconditioned the propshaft with new centre bearing, greaseable UJ's, centre bush and a new flange for R2300 all in. He also does high speed balancing. He can be contacted on 011 026 6990.

Still have the clunking though and transfer case seems OK having done a bit of trouble shooting via various forums. Tyres have even tread although they are not matched pairs. Changing the transfer box oil this weekend and will see if that makes a difference.
