Hi all.

Please help don't know what to do. I have a 2005 x3 2.5i e83 m52 engine. When i start the car in the morning it cranks and starts only after 2-3 seconds of cranking then starts off very rough like its misfiring, black smoke at the back and a smell of patrol. The revs start out at around 300 then gradually go up to 800 and then its fine and runs smooth with no smoke, doesn't cut out revs smoothly till the redline. If i turn it off and start it up again, its starts normally no smoke, but if i park it for 30min or so the problem comes back.
I scanned for codes and found P0113.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

P0113 error is shown for an air intake temp that is out of range.

It sounds like your car is over-fuelling (misfire, black smoke) during cold starting as a result of the faulty sensor.

The air intake temp sensor might be integrated into the mass air flow meter (MAF) or be a separate sensor, check on realoem with your vin to be sure.

BTW, your car has the M54 engine, not M52.

Thanks for pointing me on the right direction :smilebounce:. I also read that it can be caused by a dirty filter, so i replaced it. I also found a very dirty sponge seating on the bottom of the filter box. It started a bit better today but the problem is not solved yet.

I've noticed that my intake temp sensor is not located on the intake manifold so i suppose its on the MAF. Can i test it by starting the car with the MAF disconnected?

Are you sure that there is no sensor in the intake manifold?

Look at part no 3 in the diagram:
