X1, thoughts.

I have noticed lately that my F20 125i is just too uncomfortable to get in and out of, it has also started feeling a bit cramped and with my bum knee operating the clutch pedal takes away the joys of having a manual to begin with. So my mind has started thinking of a X1 to replace it. No idea if it's worth it or even if a dealership will offer a decent trade in. Anyway I'm thinking a diesel, auto, white and definitely M sport. X3 may work as well but they are just too expensive unfortunately. So thoughts or criticism of going for X1 or staying with the 125i. Pros for the 125i is I owe no money on it so it offers some financial freedom over a replacement car that will have to be financed again. The other issue of course is the interest rate hikes that are likely to continue.

The best and only solution for this dilemma is for you to get an E39.

Yup, that's it. That is all.

Going to test drive a demo 2015 model tomorrow and see what it feels like. Tbh I'm not happy about this fwd x drive but will keep an open mind until I drove it.

If you were going X5 it would be different

+1

Have you considered a slightly older E70 X5 - prices have dropped quite a bit since the new model is out and you should be able to find one with some MP left at the cost of a newish X1.

X5 is also a substantial jump in terms of space and comfort levels compared to X1, since that appears to be your primary reason for changing.

I don't know if you can stomach the looks of the 2 Active Tourer, but if you are after a bit more space and easier entry/exit it might be an option too - if you want to stay with BMW and you are after a new(ish) one.

It's around R55k cheaper to begin with (I haven't looked at standard spec - X1 sDrive 2.0d A vs. 220d AT A though) and it has been on the market longer than the new X1, so you might be able to negotiate a better deal on it or find a second-hand one / demo, if you're open to the option.

I'm not sure it will hold its second-hand value as "well" (BMWs aren't exactly investment cars...) as the X1, but if you plan on keeping it for a long time, it may not be such an issue, especially if you get a demo/second-hand one to begin with.

I'm not a fan of the 2 AT myself, but I thought I'd at least mention it.
Like the X1 sDrive, it's FWD too.

*** Flame suit on ***

If you want comfort and space, consider one of these:

Comfortable auto alternative

But if you intentionally want compromised ride and comfort levels, then ignore this comment

*** Flame suit off ***

I'm not specifically looking for a more comfortable car. Mostly just one that is a bit higher off the ground so my knees don't crap out. I have no idea how much if any a X1 is higher than a 1 series but I will see tomorrow. That one has X drive so I guess it's not that bad. Though it seems it's front biased similarly to quatro. As for the larger proper suv's I don't have anywhere to park something that large. Well unless I feel like making a 20 point turn every day. Complex living sucks.

An X5 is not that much longer than an X1, and is a lot easier to get in and out of than an X1. X1 just looks higher because of the stance, but it's really just a sedan with a little lift. X5 is slide in height, which sounds like what you need.

I don't really like the X5. If the X1 is no better than my 1 series I will have to look at other options.

HI there, i'm in a similar situation with the knees that struggle with lots of exercise so i also find the 1 series a bit low. Although i had the previous version of the X1 and found it terrible but i see the new one has been getting good reviews, except from Clarkson again. I do think that in SA conditions and markets (we get no touring anymore) it's probably not as bad as Clarkson makes out..

I do feel it's overpriced when compared to X3 and other 'smaller' SUV's though. I feel there is more value for money with some other brands at the moment in that SUV size market, i'm really tempted by that new CX-5 for example!

just my 2c worth :)

Ok, the CX5. All I can say is if driving is nothing beyond a means of transport it's probably ok. However it's 2.2 diesel engine is utterly gutless. It aparantly has over 400nm but it's either well hidden or very shy cause I felt no evidence of it at all. The steering is too light and vague. It offers no confidence in a sweeping bend at all, in fact it's lack of high speed cornering ability was frightening. In conclusion, it's utter crap thing to drive but for some the frankly amazing list of standard features and it's low price is probably more important than the way it drives. So now it's back to thinking about all this. The X1 is out as well cause I just can't stomach owning a BMW that has a front biased AWD system. So either I look for an older X3 or I'm pretty much stuffed at the moment.
