Worst Nightmare

About a few hours ago I was on my way home traveling on the N17. As I approached a dual lane which was narrowed to 1 lane, there was a rubber base (those things which holds danger plates) lying in the middle of the road :bangdesk: there was no way to avoid it other then going over it which I did and the next thing there was a loud BANG !!! and felt the car lift off for a split second :argh:

I pulled over immediately to check..... the sump cover plate is bent and hanging low and there was oil leaking from the gearbox  I was about 15km away from home and didnt want to stay out on the open road and decided to drive back.

On take off the car had no power, sounded like a tractor and had a bad vibration. I got a feeling the gearbox is foooooked :bangdesk: I'll probably have to take a day off work to get that plate bent in taken to the nearest garage.

Rant Over

Exact same thing happened to me last year in August, I was lucky enough to swerve in time so that it went under the left side of my car. But it ripped the side skirt right off. I stopped to fetch my side skirt, but it was broken in half.

A trip to the local scrap yard and R400 later I had a new side skirt.

But still really kak. These road works are stupid and unfair, what the hell is something like that doing in the middle of a highway. It can easily kill someone.

My car felt like it took off, the whole car lifted. Really unsafe.

I would like to drive a bakkie under those circumstances. Good luck with the repair.

Right now I'm seriously considering getting a double cab bakkie or a jetta 5 :mmm: but won't jump to conclusions once damage is assessed.

If the road was under construction you should be able to claim for the damages. Chat to your insurance company and ask them for advise. If you can, go back to the scene and take pics of the rubber plates lying "irresponsibly" in the middle of the road.

No man, that is an accident. Try to claim from your insurance. Just don't tell them you drove home. First thing tomorrow morning, get a SAPS case number.
