Depends whos gonna drive it,

The C200 W203 is a great family car, safe, reliable, is okish with resale provided you buy right.

And is a bit less demanded by hijackers, so if its for the wife, the C200k is a really really nice car.

I had the C270, found it boring, your not quite as involved with the drive as you are in the beemer, but if you dont want her to be involved in the ride and need a safe family run around, I can recommend it.

My neighbour got taken the other day in his E46, so it makes me think twice about buying my wife one, she has been forbidden to take the E34 anywhere, cause they want that one too

well thats not a bad idea

we currently have an opel gsi which she drives ,a chev captiva which i use everyday and for camping and then we have the 325ci

plan is to get rid of the opel, give her the 325ci (as much as it pains me ) she only travels 10 km every day and buy us a nice travelling car which my daughter can be comfortable in the back seat , we travel to kzn at least once a month

thats why i was looking at the merc or a good second hand e60 as it is not for everyday use

The Volvo is safe, reliable and has very good residuals. It comes with a awesome engine (ST engine) and looks the part too.

I personally would not touch a Merc... Especially if its a diesel.

Mike,

My diesel merc saw about 60,000km under the guidence of my right foot with a unichip making 510ish odd Nm and only issue was glowplugs and a leaky boost pipe, she had 119 on it when I let her go, they are really really nice cars.

But mrs jones down the street she is nice...

volvo s40 T5 = brilliant value for money used car. they sell for a packet of peanuts and a coke at 2yrs old.

Insurance is reletively cheap as well, its a family sedan, with one of the worlds top safety ratings.

I am refferring to the newer mercs... Dont make me post pictures of the PLASTIC manifold and how clogged up with crap they are on the new diesels and how it costs R15 000 a shot every service because of poor design and plastic bits that actually end up in the engine...

The old Mercs may be good but I have had to deal with far to many new Mercs (Only diesels) that seem to have issues.

decisions decisions

if only my company would change their policy and allow us to buy sedans instead of suvs only, then captiva can go and i can buy me a decent sedan/ travelling vehicle , sell the opel ,give the bm to the wife and get a cheapie bakkie for camping

problem solved, but convincing them another story

Mike,

Without making you post pictures, which mercs are you referring too, purely out of interest

the W204's... (new C)

THis is very very interesting, I was considering buying my wife a lil A190 as a replacement for her golf.

hi

i am talking the new c class. i found a c200 kompressor 30 000 on the clock avantgarde with navigation for 279 000 .

they range from 250000 to about 290000 2007 -2008 models cheaper if you hunt

Its mostly the newer C170 Diesels and A class diesels and we had one older one (pre facelift) that played havoc...

The exact models etc I dont know. In the last few months we have had customers asking us why their new Mercs do it.. We have investigated it and realised the dealers are using a very old spec diesel oil and that is causes the trouble...

What bugs me is how a brand like mercedes can use a plastic Manifold. The one customer had an engine butterfly valve missing off his as it has melted. Where it went we dont know... Inside the Engine?

And this is his wifes car. She doesnt even drive it hard.

I am not knocking the car at all. Merc make fantastic cars.

I just feel you will be better off with a Volvo, BMW or Audi.

Just go for the Volvo... Its honestly such a good buy.

Our business developer in JHB has the S40 T5 and not even a 335i could get him away from it or a RS4... Funny that... He just ordered a full house Scirocco for March next year.

Its a great car... Add an exhaust and if you really bored add a chip and you are made.

At the same time... Its a safe car for the wife. And when you want to have some fun it has the power and handling etc.

thanks

my money is on bmw , but the resale of the bigger models scare me

If your not going to use it that much and keep it in good condition, you'll probably have it forever. So resell value doesn't matter :):)

enverh,

Make no mistake dude, the depreciation on that merc is gonna bite you just as hard.

My research tells me that the slightly older merc's hold their value's better then the equiv. bmw or audi (I actually made some money back on my merc i sold for once in my life)

Just my opinion of course,

And with Mike's comment in mind, guess no A class for the wife.
