White Smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

Hi everyone - I'm a newbie. I drive a BMW 320i e92 2009 automatic.

So, onto the problem. Whenever I'm driving no matter what type meaning either going 120 or going 50 in the city, I always run into the problem that when I reach a stop & accelerate, my car releases a cloud of white smoke directly from the exhaust.
I have zero clue as to what it could be but was told by a mechanic that I need to replace my engine and he would charge about 50k? Although I'm not an expert I can't agree - I have not driven the snot shit out of it and it's not really a sports car so how can the engine go when I've only done 162 000 k's? Is this normal for BMW's?

I must say that I only noticed this problem when I got it back from it's last service.
It does chow oil but I'm not sure if 10 litres in about 1.5 years is normal?

If anyone could give me some pointers or an idea of what it could be it would help..

Thanks in advance!

Agree with the above views, definately seals.

Do not go back to that mech. Which srea are you from so maybe someone here can point you in the right direction. The repair is R7-10k including parts and labour.

Thank you! I was about to ask for a price estimate. I stay in Hartbeespoort so I'm close to JHB & PTA.

Definitely going back to that tool. I used to service all my cars there but since the last one, he'll never see me again.

Mine does the same, it's been a year now. Was told it's valve stem seals. So i keep oil in the car in case I run out. I have only used 5 litres more since then.

Check with JoHN from leo harse bosch center. His in your area and is a forum advertiser as well. They were running a special on that engine. You will find them under the vendors section.

 very nice - but on the subject I dont agree with the guys about your mech - I would go back and punch him in the nose and tell him that you have told everyone on the BMW Fanatics forum and He will start losing business for trying to take advantage of you.

With such a wealth of easily accessible knowledge online , I find it so difficult to understand how these mechanics can still attempt to screw over a customer like this . And a long standing loyal customer as well . Its such a disgrace .
