hi all, I need some advice...
my 2008 320i a/t with mileage 82000 has a terrible whining noise - no matter what speed i drive. i took the car to 2 independent workshops. they both pin the source on the diff. now both claim that no parts are available to do a repair. only option is to replace it at a cost of R28K :flyfun:
i just can't believe this - can the 320i E90 automatic's DIFF be repaired, or must it be replaced

If it is the diff, you should be able to keep up a second hand unit at a scrap yard for R3000.

The car was hoisted up and they spun the rear wheels while listening with a stethoscope. I could hear the bearings grind while the wheels got spun.

Did manage to find a used one for R8000 on olx. Is this still too much for used?

+1 on that suggestion:thumbs: i have heard of a few E90 320i's that have run into this problem. Also make your way to the new members section and post some pics of your ride

I'm just wondering if this diff is like the new "maintenance free" batteries, once all the distilled water has evaporated, you chuck and replace it, instead of just topping it up with a R10.00 bottle of distilled water? :dunno:

Are the diff ratios for the E30 318i manual and 318i auto different? because my 318i auto that I converted to manual by swopping the 'box and pedals seems to have a lot more power than my 318i manual that came off the assembly line as a manual.
