Which one to get?

So I hope to have my car 100% ready with the way I want it before the end of the year. Unfortunately that will also be the time to maybe sell it and move on. I have a few cars in mind and would like some input so I can start to look around as getting the right car could take months.

Warning: Some of the cars might not be BMW's.

Logical choices:
1. BMW e90 330d
2. VW Golf 5 GTI (Will need modding)

Really want but may not be the best financial choice wrt insurance and gas:
1. 2007 BMW e92 335i M
2. 2001 - 2003 BMW e46 M3
3. 2000+ BMW e39 M5

Outsiders (like and may consider):
1. Earlier model BMW N54 135i manual
2. BMW Z4 3.0 M

Feel free to add and motivate.

Thanks very much!

Kind regards

PS. I would really like something with similar or more oomph than my current car. I may be financially cautious but im still a fanatic.

What fuel mileage do you get at the moment?

Cause if driven properly and not always like a moegoe, you could get 11.5-12.5 on an e46 M3.

I usually sit around there when driving normally, but a few good pulls and we're sitting in mid 13's... and even more tomfoolery will see that number rise into 14's and eventually 15's if you are hard pressed on being the next Senna.

And then it takes a good day or two of civilized driving to bring it back down to mid 12's.

My last check saw me paying R1.78 per km when driving civilized. So for a full tank costing around R1000, I would get around 561km. Obviously this is cruising and changing gears properly.

My last drive I put R400 in and I did around 250km. I don't use etoll highways, so that finds me using back roads alot. I just get into a higher gear as soon as I can and cruise.

Not sure how much a modified engine helps in this regard... Maybe another e46 m3 driver can confirm his fuel usage.

First... Erase the VW

I'd go for the E39 M5 or E90 330d :praise:

First... Erase the VW  +1:rollsmile:

1. 135i Manual ( let the modding begin )
2. E46 M3 ( Let the looking after begin )

Great choices enjoy good luck.

dont see the point of getting the G5 when maintenance and running costs will be similar to the others :fencelook:

surely the cost for replacing the O2 sensors and crank senors are cheaper than buying a new car?

the e46 is now at the bottom of its depreciation curve and the power issue you are having should just be some sensor issue... if you happy with the e46 then fix it and keep it...

My Choice:

335i Manual (if fuel/mileage is not a concern)
135i Manual/dct (if fuel/mileage is not a concern)
330d Value for money choice....

Nothing wrong with a GTI but i see it pointless spending money on cheapish looking interior.
Audi A3 2.0T Sportback over GTI any given day!!

Thanks very much guys. So G5 is out of the question.

So its e90 330d, e46 M3, n54 135 and maybe the others.

@ moranor. No I have the Crank sensor already and I believe the O2 sensors might just be something else like an airleak or similar. Have allready phoned Diesel Electric and a Bosch O2 sensor goes for R892 or something so I can even replace both of the sensors if need be.

Car is currently sitting at 282 500km. Theres nothing really wrong with the car. Brand new clutch and DMF, getting steering wheel recovered, doing front seats and headliner later in the year, brand new Meyle Control Arms done, Powerflex LCABs done, will let you know when I have cash for RTABs, need to replace rear shocks and lastly discs and brake pads then its perfect.

Just feel like its time to move on especially with the high mileage.

Allready stated that this might only be much later in the year. Car will probably be sold for R60 000.00 or R55 000.00 for a fanatic. Should be a decent deposit on the above.

PS. Car is not really slow at the moment. Had a run with a G5 2 days ago and comfortably beat him by 1 and a half car lengths up till 120km/h. This is with O2 and crank sensor issues.

PS. My parents both have Diesels (2006 Merc C320 CDI and a 2012 Merc C350 CDI) so im no stranger to diesels. I just hope the BMW 330d isnt as joyless as the Mercs. Please convince me. Always very eager to get back into my car after driving them.

Hopefully I can go for a spin in gconry's e39 M5 and have some sense knocked back into me.

I'd say 135i

Though coming from an E46 328i as well I'd say you would be pretty happy with the E90. Drove one and was left more than satisfied, made my car feel very underpowered.
