@ Peanuts: Have a look at some of the after-market ones. They go for around R6k (e.g. stopshop). Have not tried one, but the features seem pretty impressive and the latest ones now have the OEM look and feel to it.

The problem with the BMW one is getting all the parts and cables, as I was looking for one when I had my E39 but it was impossible to get it. However, if you do get lucky at the scrapyards, it's a different story.

@Peanuts - No problems bro. THe whole point of this forum is that BMW fanatics can help each other.

Sorry i couldnt be more help.

@MSM - dude just having that in the car is awesome. it doesnt have to play MP3's cos its cool without that :) . That is a great party piece to have in a car.

@Taffs - I agree with you that BMW need to step up their game. Im not sure whats the standard on the e90's. I hope they play mp3 as standard or else :censored: . Tapes went out of action many many years ago. Who uses tapes nowadays. I dont get them, build a tecnhological masterpiece and give it a tape deck. thats like having a super hot chick with no titties. Im sure it will be great to ride, but no airbags would really mess up the drive. :) :) :)

The E90s play mp3 and it was not an optional extra luckily...

yeah - can you imagine JLo without that rear end, or Pam Anderson without the hooters - useless.

@Taffs - would love to go to the races, but the wife is very ill, in bed. Cant leave even if i wanted to.

@Peanuts - its a good thing that the e90s play mp3. Id be pissed off if i had to buy a car that expensive (BMW's are not cheap) and it didnt play mp3's (even the bloody TATA indikaka's play mp3).

But guys - search for the mp3 player. I dunno how you would know if it does play mp3, but keep the search up.

And if you dont find it then use the money you would have spent on the player and upgrade the sound system (maybe a proper DLS - First choice, Rockford Fosgate, Phoenix Gold, MB Quartz, BOSE,or Digital Design system) cos it will cost you about the same as the mp3 player would, and would sound a million times better than the standard equipment. (now i just need to save some money to do this myself).

Xmax - Sorry bud, maybe next time....wife comes first.

Sound upgrade would be a better choice, pity pity pity that my car is still under MP otherwise 19" CSL Rims and a high end audio system would have been in!!! but nevertheless, its always good to talk about these things and get excited momentarily :):):)

Flip it.....my 2005 Model doesnt play MP3's:banghead:
And it has Bus. Audio!!!!

Sorry cuz. This is just another example of the stealers wanting to squeeze every last cent out of the consumer. Im pretty sure that the players were supposed to be mp3 compatible for the 2005 model. I guess the stealers decided to make it an optional extra.

When you tested MP3 on Shuttle, was there any notice info on your deck or did it only show track 1?

From late 2004 some of them did play mp3s. Mine has 08/2004 date stamp on it. My part #65 12 6 943 435

I bought another one from a 2005 318ti, its date stamp is 10/2005 and it doesn't play mp3s. Part #65 12 6 939 660

Here is what mine looks like.

So if you are at the scrapyard, look for the 943 435 one.

@ Peanuts.....mine does the same.
@Gizmo...Thanks for the advice regarding these MP3 Players, even bmw agents dont know much about this, they said that its software related and that needs to be changed also, dont know if this is true or not.

FYI....

Found this post on another Forum, might help the guys here...

I have just been through the whole mission that you are now asking about. I also have an E46 beemer but am not willing to sacrafice the HU because to put anything else in there will look really trashy, yet the standard HU doesn't play MP3's.

So, the solution for is is the following:
Dension make the IPOD integration unit that BMW sell directly, get hold of one of those for R1800. Get someone (qualified) to do your install and put it wherever you like (mine will go in the drawer thing to the left of my handbrake, the cubbie could also be OK). Then plug in your ipod and you are all smiles, the Ipod will charge and output thru the car's speakers. The best part of all is that the stearing controls will still control volume and shuffle tracks on your Ipod. All you do is select "mode" as if you are selecting the CD shuttle in the back. Also, there is a extra cable unit for about R300 that you can buy and you won't have to sacrafice your shuttle either.

The only kak part is that you are then still sitting with crappy sound quality from the headunit. However, that can be fixed by means of fitting a sound processor. I am personally going for the RF 360.1 which is an amazing unit! It retails at around R3k but the tweaking and most amazing sound quality can be achieved thru this. Then get one of the pro's to setup your system using the RF360.1 and an RTA analyser and you'll never be able to listen to any standard car system again! Tongue

If you want to know more feel free to post here or mail me on [email protected] . If you want to discuss it drop me a mail and I'll give you my phone number. I am in Cape Town and have already researched for professional installers and all the equipment. Mine will go into my car in mid Jan when he's free.

The next step is researching which speakers and/or amp you'd get put in! I can give you loads of opinions on that too. I'm going for a DLS front stage (DLS R6A's) and two Rockford P2 10" in the back. Powered from a Zapco I450 amp.
