What would you pick as a daily?

From what I have read, they are pretty reliable. Get ZF to check the transfer case and invest in a decent aftermarket warranty.

I'm sure if you're patent you can find a low mileage one.

I am in the exact same boat as you, with regards to getting a new daily in a similar budget. Will be looking to purchase sometime in Q1 next year, interested to see what choice you make - only caveat for me, it needs to be an SUV/SAV, as my SO will use the car as well.

I have 3 main choices (<3 years old and balance of plan):
VW Tiguan
Mazda CX5
Nissan Qashqai

My only issue is, I can't step away from the BMW stable, even though that means a slightly older model. I really like the F25, X3 Motorsport (I know that this kit sort of negates any off-roading, which suits me fine). Chances are I will end up in a BMW with the tail end of plan and will then maintain myself.. Would like a 3.0d but for my purposes, a 2.0d would do fine as well.

I'm not enjoying this boat we're in, brother! Its tough to decide.

I called the dealer with that X3 30d, awaiting for more info about it.

Agree, it really is difficult to decide given the great choices outside the German stable.

If I was in a position to buy now, I would've already called about that 3.0d :fencelook:

I have some minimum search criteria though:

- Motorsport kit
- Xenons
- Sunroof
- PDC, rear and/or front
- Alpine white paintwork, 19" wheels, sports auto/paddle shift, pro-nav and HiFi sound would be nice to have's.. Anything above this would be a bonus.

This model has all of that, minus pro-nav. Looks like it's the same situation as the F30... No Bluetooth audio with the base model. My sister lives around there, so she's going to scope it out for me this week. Wish it was the LCI version though.... But now I'm just being picky. Would be awesome to stay in the BMW ecosystem.
I still can't help but wonder if a much newer CX5 isn't the better buy though

Stick with the bmw. Even the top of the range CX5 didn’t feel premium enough.

Test drive it, then test drive X1 or X3 if you haven’t already.

My thoughts on the CX5 2.0 here:

https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=87088

If I was in your shoes, at R400k, I would go for a low mileage CX5 2.2DE (either the FWD Active model in the new shape (power is now the same as the AWD) or the AWD Akera in the old shape).

You can haggle a Mazda dealer for a one year old model with under 20,000km for under R400k.

I would also recommend upping the warranty with Mazda SA (not aftermarket) from 3 years to 5 years unlimited kms. No need to up the service plan, since Mazda services are reasonable.

Just some history on the 2.2DE models:
- The old shape (pre 2018/17) 2.2DE Active was FWD and had 110kw/380Nm
- The old shape 2.2DE Akera was AWD with much better spec and had 129kw/420Nm.
- The 'early' new shape (2017-2018) 2.2DE Active and Akeras both had the same 129kw/420Nm motors
- The 'updated' new shape (late 2018) 2.2DE Active and Akeras both now have a 140kw/450Nm motors - same power but better torque than a new X3 2.0d!

Even the old shape (my model is a 2016 spec) still has better interior quality than my 2017 F30. The MZD Connect also has better graphics than the standard infotainment system in my F30.

In terms of handling, this SUV is very chuckable at the limit and feels fun - much better than all of the other Japs, maybe a bit better than the current Tiguan, maybe on par with X1/X3.

The comparisons to the Qashqai is some of the earlier posts is a moot point - the CX5 is more an X-Trail rival in terms of size and space. The Qashqai is a raised hatchback.

I'd also suggest a 330D as an overall package. I know it's not on your list but such an amazing all rounder. The new CX-5 would be the other option. Having been in a few GTi's, new Polo etc, it's "nice" in my opinion but boring, plastic, hard drive, just nowhere close or comparable to the F30 330D in any way. I was looking at a 7 a while back. Went to look at a few 7's priced around R375 000 a while back and it just didn't cut the deal. :dunnoanymore:

Fantastic info, thanks! I actually didn't know the "new" new model got a refresh. I wondered why the 2nd hand 2018 "dynamic" models I saw online didn't seem to have folding mirrors, when it's advertised in their brochure. Maybe that's why.

I've been in contact with a dealer about this:
https://www.autotrader.co.za/used-c...ort-auto-fpa-2fb51e0fd70a47e4a8a66e849a995bc7

It's a bit over-budget but doable. But then I think about it... Only 20000km left of motorplan, and a sub-par infotainment screen Vs brand new (or close enough), all the bells and whistles CX-5.

It does seem like a no-brainer. Damn BMW for its brand power.

**EDIT** Oh yeah, that other white BMW X3 had a comment about a front bumper replacement. Decided to avoid it.

At the end of the day, its all about what matters to YOU... I would rather pay the same amount for an older, slightly lower specced BMW than a new Mazda.. Yes, it is really silly, but since when did that count when it comes to matters of the heart :fencelook:

I prefer German cars and consider myself a proper BMW loyalist, so stepping out of that zone will take some doing. That said, once I drive a few options, maybe my outlook will change.

Message Coisman/John about the white 3.0d, depends what damage it was and the value of the damage. Perhaps you can negotiate on price slightly.

suggestions? Any other cars I should check out? My budget is about R400k MAX.

The world is your Oyster.

Nissan/Toyota/Ford/Mutsubishi are offering very decent discounts on their mid level pickups.

Toyota is offering substantial discounts on the RAV as they are clearing out for a new model.

Nissan doing the same with the X-trail you can get a nice one sub 400k.

Mazda i am not to sure about their discounts but it is the pick of the bunch for me looks wise and interior wise.

What i can tell you though is look at the offering from Lexus.

400K buys you a nice IS350 EX/ F-sport

It goes like stink, sounds fantastic and carries all the kit you want. Heated seats, Electric seats, Nav and so on and so forth. Lexus will give you a 2year 250 000km warranty factory backed even if the car is out of warranty for 11K. Even extending the motorplan to 180 000km costs less than 40k. As a value proposition i see very little that can match it.

I would strongly recommend one over any 3 series.

Good recommendation on the Lexus.
Brilliant reliability (it is a Toyota after all) and will not be top of the hijacker's list.

Lexus retail value drops like a stone. Worse than BMW. They also almost all N/A which makes them heavy on fuel.

330d ftw. Def one of the best DD's if you say like zipping through.

Get a '14/'15 and extend plan if you have the budget

I would definitely go for this too :cartel: Very few cars(if any) match this in terms of consumption vs performance and you should be able to get an extremely good example within your 400k budget

I'm sort of leaning away from another 3 series to be honest. I do love it, but a change would be nice. I'd love an M-Sport X3, but alas, I cant find a good example of one for my price range. And I'm not keen on trying to move finances around/take a balloon for the new one..

We just got a CX-5 for my wife about 2 months ago, the 2.0L NA model. Took it to Magaliesburg over the weekend. It does need to rev a bit but it has enough power for a daily. I would definitely consider it! Skyactiv engines are rocksolid.

Which trim package did you guys get? The active, dynamic or individual?
The active auto would be my starting point, but I like the extras the dynamic brings..

We got the active. Only just made it into our budget. Spec level does miss a few nice things like heated/electric seats, leather, OHD etc. but for our purposes was a massive upgrade. We also tested the diesel, was amazing but too pricey unfortunately. You've got lots of good options to consider.

Hmm, interesting. I've never considered a Lexus. I just watched a review on it though, seems like it would be fuel heavy. But yeah, seems like I could pic up a really low mileage one at that amount. Not sure if its what I'm looking for in my next car though.. I'll have to think about this one.

I think I'd have to go for at least a dynamic to make it feel like an "upgrade" to my BMW. Doable I guess, but I'd look at second hand then.

Not to sure how much worse it it can be next to a SUV. Depends on the kind of roads you will be driving. Majority open road driving it will be fine on gas, town driving it might suck.

Lexus also offers the ES model rage, not RWD not 6Cyl, but massive cars well equipped and reasonably economical, heck you can even get a Hybrid model.
