What Scooter?

Howsit guys.

Ive been toying with the idea of getting a Scooter of some sort. I live very close to work, and after doing some calculations I came to the conclusion that Ill be saving some money if I dont use my car all the time.

Ive been out of the scene for a while, and I thought It would be a good idea to get some recommendations in terms of what to buy/kit.

My needs:

1. Looking to spend R10 - R20k, dont require a new scooter, but it must be durable, and rock solid. Not interested in a generic plastic scooter purchased from Makro.
2. I had a scooter at varsity, and at one sage I fitted an performance exhaust to it. Ill probably go this route again, so looking at models, aftermarket parts should be readily availible.
3. What brands do I look at in terms of gear? Probably need a basic jacket? What helmets are good?

I was doing some research online, and it seems like the Yahama BWS 100cc is a pretty solid bike? Its quite expensive 2nd hand, comparing to other new models.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Scooters, there are so many to choose from, and the likes of GoMoto, Jonway.. can be seen everywhere.

I've got a 150cc GoMoto at home, it's a pretty cool thing, paid about R13,000 for it new, and value as far as I am concerned, is pretty good.

Gloves, helmet (what do you want to pay??), jacket should do you.... always wear closed shoes.

I have no idea what kit goes for these days. I have however decided on getting a good quality helmet and jacket as a bare minimum.

Hows the availability for aftermarket parts for the GoMoto series?

Dont ever buy bigboy scooters, thet seem to fall apart quickly. Ive had one for about a year and had to replace the belt only 5 months after owning one.

If budget allows, look at getting a 250 CC proper bike.

I actually have a CBX 250 Twister Honda as well as a commuter. Works like a bomb, Small enough for lane splitting and fast enough off the line to get ahead of traffic.

Theres many available for 15k to 17k on tandvleisboom. (Gumtree)

This is a good idea, the little CBR's are very nice.

Thanks for the headsup.

These things look HUGE!

What is the lifespan of these engines? They all seem to have fairly low km's on the clock 2nd hand (compared to a car in any way). What is seen as a lot of km's for your typical scooter?

Look for kays under 20000.

One of my mates delivery bikes CBX has clocked over 100000 KMS twice now on the same motor.

Services are cheap, 2 bottles of oil at R90 bucks each and a spark plug at R90, and an oil and air filter at about R400.

Change oil every 3000 to 4000 kms and oil and air filter every 12000 kms and you will forever ride that CBX/CBR

Typical high milleage for a scooter is anything over 15000 kms

I bought a suzuki AN 125 cc scooter brand new. Approx R13,000. I use it for commutting to work. So basically a 30km round trip from Randburg to Sandton daily. I put on 7200km on it in the last 12 months. No issues at all. Engine capacity you need, will depend on what speeds you need to get up to and your body weight.

I get up to 90km/h with ease. Weight roughly 70kgs

Have a look at a second hand Yamaha BWS100 scooter. I know its only a 100cc two stroke but modding possibilities are endless and they run like the clappers for a little scooter. Very cheap mainenance,my old scooter that i got back in 2010 sits on 30000km now and I have only done brakepds, sparkplugs, oil and belt and rollers(quite cheap +-R1000-1500 if I remember correctly) amd it still runs like it did brand new. Absolutely bulletproof scooter and so much fun in town.

The BWS was actually the original model that I was looking for.

Pity its been discontinued, and the new 125 is R35k :blueCry:

Reviving an old thread...

I finally managed to get my learners and after months of searching I finally found a Yamaha BWS.

I managed to source a 2013 model with 2000km

A few questions for the Bike Fanatics:

Its been standing for some time (only did 1 000km per year) and I think a service would be due to put my mind at ease.

Ive done some research prior to buying, and it seems the internals and engine is very basic. Is it possible to service this bike myself? If not, where in JHB (Sandton) can I service it?
