Hi, my wife has just recently got her licence. and now I want to buy her a car to get some driving experience ( Ill be dammed if im going to let her drive the e46 with no experience).

I was thinking bout getting her a tazz or citi golf, but after thinking about it again I realised that i could get a decent e36 318i or 318is for around the R45000 mark.

This is why ive come here to ask you lot.

do you think its a good idea (practically) to get the e36 for her, or should i rather get her the Tazz or golf.... remember that having just got her licence, she IS going to bump and scratch the car.

I got a white 1992 E36 316i with 118000Km and only about 35000Km on the engine that was replaced by BMW at their expense in 2007 due to manufacturing fault.

car is full house, color coded bumpers, anti smash & grab tint, sunroof, black leather, full set of Mags (5), rear head rests, rear blind, 3 spoke leather steering wheel & leather gear knob, Pioneer MP3 Front loader, 6x9's under parcel shelf, did the electric fan conversion & brand new radiator, front fog lights. in the last 2 years i have had all 4 springs replaced, & rear shocks.

Full service history, got the books to prove it :)

We have had the car in our family from New.. Was my moms car, I only got it in 2008.

Looking at about R45000 :)

There we go, your problems are solved :)

Bra i would think a e36 318is is good.
Remember it has ABS, Airbags, power steering......and cant beat a BMW when it comes to strength on impact...."lets hope it doesnt get to that"

I would stay away from a tazz....Very weak cars if you ask me.....A very close friend of mine passed away in a tazz...My bro meet up in an accident with a tazz about a month ago and man you dont want to see the pics of the tazz....So thats a no no on my side...

Golf 1 is out...esp for a women.....SA's number one most wanted car ( By hijackers). Golf 4 1.6 is nice. Should pick up a nice one for about 50k.....

Always remember she is a women and if you read our news papers there is S##t going on everyday!!!

If i was in your shoes i would buy a clean e36....put smash and grab....Not very protective but you will have some sort of security.....

You also have to consider though replacing a clutch in a BMW is going to be more expensive, body panels for dings and scratches (and she is going to scratch it) will also be more expensive.

I dont know, the guys are right, the 318 has ABS and an airbag, so its a lot safer, but I taught my wife to drive in a tazz which she kept for about a year afterwards (only did local shop and back) and once she could drive, I bought her a decent car.

Its a tough one,

I agree with Budleigh get a cheap run about first till shes confident driving and besides moving up from a run about to a bimmer is a wonderfull feeling shell appriacate the car more once she feels the quality,

a clean e36 could be a banged up e36 in two months, prime example is my cuzn, my uncle bought her a golf 1 to drive to campus and back seeing that we studied at the same campus he told me that i should drive everyday and she can drive on the weekends.
Long story short the first weekend she had the car it came home with a broken front axle dented fender and damaged gearbox... she hit a curb doing 80km/h

then my uncle bought her a pimped up KIA and she rolled it two months later :hammerhead:

so driving experience goes a long way despite having a good car.

e36 is an excellent idea but you have to also consider the fact that she is a new driver and an e36 is quite a large car for a learner driver to get used to driving but if she is a confident driver i think you should go for it.
stay away from a tazz, golfa and polo very high risk cars and not comfortable to drive(except for the polo).
i would say go a hyundai getz or you might be able to get a toyota yaris for 45k if you look hard enough :)....these cars have all the features in including airbags
after a few months get rid of the car and get her a 130i :)

@Andrew - Im sure your car is awesome

@ all who responded. Thanks.

Im not looking to buy right away. Still have to recover from buying the e46 ( I paid cash for it, so my reserves are a little depleted).

Perhaps in a few months.

I do think that a box beemer or a tazzo might be the better option for now. then better quality car (BMW of course). She would only use it to work and back. that would be a grand total of 6km return per day. we are new to jozi, so she wont go anywhere without me there (you know women and directions ..... i tell her, weve been to Fourways mall together so many times... but no... she says that shes a passenger and didnt need to know how to actually get there :thinker: women.).

anyways, thanks all for your replies.

@ Andrew - Im gonna speak to my brother in durbs. He said that hes looking for a e36 for himself. Ill let him know about your car.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo..............Not A box beemer :nono:....Ass happy cars.....

I doubt that my wife will ever drive it fast enough to make it throw the back out. in anycase, it would only be a 318i or 316i.

I had a 318i...In the rain it is abit swingy.....And the worst part is that golf1 and box beemer shares the top spot for most wanted in sa....A thief doesnt care if it say 318 or 325....a box is a box to them.....Not putting you off it but thats just my opinion bro....

Box BM is a high risk vehicle..

But I had one & our E46 318i is more ass happy than the box ever was.. Even compared to my E36 the E46 is much easier to get to slide even with the ASC on..

The E36 handles much better than the E46 (I am just comparing the 2 we have)
