What BMW to buy for R150k - R200k

Hey Guys,

It so happens that I'm looking for a BMW 'to play with', but still be reliable as a daily driver (90km) Budget is between R150 - R200k. Was thinking of a 130i seeing as I've never owned any other BMW's than a 3 series. I dont want it to make 350kw and 600nm, but enough to make me smile from ear to ear. :)

The other option is the car I dreamed of as a young boy... A Silver 2 door e36 M3 with grey leather interior and all the bells and whistles. But where does one find these babies in a showroom condition these days...? :dunno:

Any other suggestions are welcomed!

U should be able to pick up a really clean low mileage E46 330i/330d Individual for around R150K.

The other alternate would be a high mileage E46 M3 as those are starting to drop to around the R200k mark.

Looking for something different... something that stands out, something that can be slightly modified and makes you say 'mmm, wonder whats lurking under there'

Found this BMW M3 for R89 000. Paint looks funny on the door in the pic... But it leaves loads of cash left for mods, engine Blueprint, balancing, diff, exhaust and software... But its a '94. What do you guys think?

If I had that money to spend on a toy, I would get a manual e39 530i, and turbo it. Of course it would then be a proper build with low CR custom forged pistons, the rest I think can take the strain. And refresh everything in the engine bay. 270-300kW should be quite easily achieved.

I'm taking notes... Thanx P1000. Looking at something smaller, I'm not a huge fan of the 5 series, a bit to big for my liking, but I can see where you are going with this.

What do you think the cost of such a conversion would be?

That is very difficult to say, I have not gone into costing of the whole setup yet, but it mostly boils down to how much of the work you can do yourself... If you are to have it done, probably 100-150k for the conversion part...

Otherwise, lets say:

12k Turbo
3k Turbo support (piping for oil maybe water, forced air)
2k Intercooler
4k5 injectors
8k remap?
10k pistons?
15k other items relating to rebuild
10k coolant system complete overhaul

64k5 Total

I'm sure I forgot something and there is somethings that will only pop up once you start. Maybe 15k suspension refresh.

The E39 is nowhere near as big as you think. And I cannot see myself in a 3, too much of a ladies car for me...

This looks nice. A late buddy in Secunda owned one, nice cars, unfortunatly a accident with it on his way to Jozi and he did not make it.

2000 E39 M5 for about R160k is not a bad option ... sure I saw one on the gum in Cape Town.

There is a 2000 M5 @ Vaalridge Auto BMW, Vereeniging for R149 000 with 170 000km on the clock...

Hmmm, go test drive it, I'm sure you'll take it.

lol... its a bit far for a quick test drive, and it leaves less money for modding...

Best you stay away from that particular M3. Rather look around, i am sure yo will find one. If it is your dream, you wont be satisfied if you dont get it.

Well at least i am that way.
