Welkumme!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

It took a long time for me to switch my loyalties to BMW but I have enjoyed the move ever since. In 2007 I bought an immaculate 2001 M3 SMG with only 19,000 km's (can you believe it) and then sold it 2 years later because I was temporarily insane. I thought that both my wife and I needed to drive a family car ahead of the arrival of our amazing boy in Feb 2009. I have since regained my composure and realised that one family car is adequate for our needs. Incidentally my wife was always concerned for my sake that I would miss driving an M3.

In late 2008 I traded in my M3 for a 4-door 335i auto but always yearned for the sight and sound of an E46 M3 (some might not agree with me on the issue of the sound of an E46 M3). I have been hunting on and off for a clean M3 with reasonable mileage but they are extremely difficult to locate.

During my treasure hunts the thought of a CSL was always a nagging - but pleasant - thought. In my opinion it is the best looking M3 ever made, but with the arrival of the E92 M3 some will disagree with me. Of course the CSL is a different kind of car and it is not to everyone's liking. A friend of mine who used to own a CSL and who was a big fan of his car said that the decision to buy one never was and never will be a decision based on logic. For a brief spell I was involved in amateur track days (an E36 and later an E46) but having a family and limited time has put that on hold for a while.

So, I have made the decision to buy an E46 M3 again. Tomorrow I am test driving a 2004 CSL and am very excited. Clearly this will be a huge change from an automatic 335i – there will be a significant trade off between “comfort” and “charisma”. Go charisma. I am not sure what the performance differential will feel like.

Good luck with the buy, Douglas, either way, you are on the right track with BMW!

Welcome Douglas

Good luck with the M3 CSL and I hope that you buy it. Despite it being a very expensive car compared to the regular M3 especially considering the minor acceleration difference, the entertainment level is completely in another league. The regular M3 is just boring in comparison.

Whenever I let you drive my M3 CSL you were always quite sedate. I hope to see some more aggressive driving. You're 335i was useless around Kyalami and me following you in the blue E46 M3 trackcar was like a cool down lap. If you buy a CSL, we should try that excersise again - I'll drive the CSL if you don't mind :)

Also congrats on your decision to race the blue E46 M3 trackcar in the BMW Cup. Definitely looks like you've decided to go "motoring hardcore" in 2010.

cheers
Andreas

Thanks for the encouragement and advice AlpinaB3!

I have good news, without any encouragement from outside parties I bought the CSL today. I am now the proud owner of number 3 CSL of 65. It is silver grey and has covered 48,000 km's.

Charisma triumphed! My concerns about the comfort levels of the CSL were unfounded which was a great relief because I really wanted to buy one. Looking forward to getting the learn how to drive the car to get the best out of it.

The car is possibly on par with a 335 but its too early to tell. I think off the line the CSL will pull the 335 but from then on it seems pretty even. But let's not obsess with straight line speed only - the CSL feels and handles very differently to a 335. An oh, let's not forget about that noise!

Hey welcome to the forum Douglas!

The CSL really is one of the most special and dedicated machines to come out of a Bavarian Factory, i rate its the best BMW alltogether in stock form. You must be so GD happy at the moment, and its unlikely to wear off anytime soon:thumbsup:

I also look forward to some pics
Congrats!

Congrats on the purchase. The exterior and interior are in unbelievably condition, virtually new. I doubt that there is a better looking example. The testing against the 335i confirms to me that the engine, especially the VANOS, is in top condition.

A M3 CSL is guaranteed to entertain any motorhead and I am certain that you will enjoy this car.
