thanx for all the suggestions and valid points guys, i have reluctantly come to the conclusion that somehow i am going to have to refit the viscous fan, even if i have to source one from a different car..

while i have no doubt that there is electric fans out there that can rival a viscous in cfm, after more research i have realized that the cars using them was designed for them, with 200A altenators seemingly par for the course..
which means that while the car in mind would cope with the load, it is unknown for how long.. and i dont see upgrading the altenator as a option.

thanx for the input guys..

Wouldn't something this strong put huge strain on the electrical system as a whole?? Viscous is way more efficient, simpler, and it WILL pull more air through than an electric fan.

That's why they used viscous in the first place, but I have to admit the aeroplane frikkin viscous on my M is downright embarrasing when I try to look cool leaving work. Try blip the throttle to impress the crowd and all you get is lawnmower drowning out the exhaust sound.

The sound my one makes

Trust me... I know what you mean
I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable with an electric fan to cool a 4L V8 though.

Well you don't have to worry actually as just the auxiliary fan on the e34 540i is capable of cooling the engine, an electric fan in place of the viscous is just extra protection.
Have driven our 540i with a busted viscous clutch in 35 degree heat with the AC on in traffic and the auxiliary kept the engine cool.
Replaced the viscous not too long ago, now I am kinda wishing it would break again so I can fit an electric fan, the viscous fan noise really really sucks :(
