Vibration on wheels at 140 upwards

Hi Guys

So I've got an e46 320d, currently on 175xxxkm.

All is fine with car, however, when I go over 140km/h, I feel a slight vibration and a loud almost hum/drone when braking. When braking the vibration gets a little worse.

I bought the car like 2 months ago, changed engine mounts and serviced it. The front tyres were worn when I bought it, put on 2 new ones this weekend however the sound is still there.

Any ideas what this may be?

Yes, I've balanced and aligned, did high-speed balancing as well.

So just replace discs? Nothing else?

Thank you guys.

When balancing, ask the guys to check for 2 specific additional things:

1) Flat spots on tyres - even if new
2) Any buckles on the rims

Also, for the E46, have someone check your LCA's - if the car has original front bushes, they can also be the issue when worn.

Other than that, as mentioned, look at warped discs.

Sometimes it will be a process of elimination. For example, if the wheels are buckled and not sorted, it will eventually warp the discs with the vibration and mess your suspension bushes.

Thanks guys. Will start the process and see what the problem is.

Last question, what about when driving? Will the discs still cause that vibration?

As they rotate with the wheel, there is a possibility. You mentioned there is some kind of noise, this is interesting.

I would say, have the wheels checked for flat spots, egging, rim damage, see if you can have your discs skimmed, but only if they will meet spec afterwards.

Wheel, bearings perhaps.

As recommended, I would change the LCAB's immediately.

I drive the company Toyota Etios every now and then. Last week when needed to make all speed bumps go away, and turn dirt roads into race tracks, there was some messed up noise coming from the engine bay ( well it sounded that way).

I asked for Fleet to book the vehicle in with Toyota. When they booked it , the funny noise was happening less often, cancelled booking. About a day later the brakes started making that grinding noise ( forgot to mention that the discs were slightly warped) then I knew the brake discs and pads need replacing.

So off it went to a workshop and guess what, that messed up noise was a thing of the past.

So bottom line is if the discs are warped, and pads need replacement, do the necessary fix and take it from there to see if (other) problems still exist.

Drive at or below the speed limit.

Fixed

:tiptoe:

Jokes aside it sounds like discs may be the problem. Also, a very slight runout in the discs may give the impression of being worse due to wear in the suspension components based on the mileage.

Hope you get it sorted.:=):

are there roads in SA that "allow" 140km/h + ? like the Autostrada or Autobahn ?

Where do you feel the vibration?
Steering only
Whole car
@140 what's your rpm?
Things I've learned over the years with similar effects.
Out of round tyres
Flat spots
The rear flange on the propshaft.
If you get the problem sorted please report back.:coolShake:
