Vanos Seals

I recently changed the seals on my e36 3.2 vanos. But its still seem to be sweating a bit of oil through the piston cover (no 6 in the diagram) When changing the seals I did not change no. 3, 4, 5, 22 and 29 because BMW did not have any stock and I couldn't wait 2 weeks for it to arrive from Germany. I also put in a new tappet cover gasket. Anybody have any ideas on what to do now or advice?

get new o-rings, you should have waited until you had all the necessary items before starting.

Its leaking through part number 6 and yet you did not change part number 22...you kind of answered your own question there....Freerider's advice rings true ,wait for all parts before starting, now you will need to replace those parts and probably more too.....

So your saying that all o rings should be changed again? Or just 22? Ok the reason I ask is cause most after market kits do not come with these o rings. They come with the solenoid o rings and the vanos to cylinder head o rings. Also is part no 29 important to change as well?

when I did my vanos I replaced every O-ring that I needed to disturb while performing the whole operation. If they werent weeping before and were not disturbed during the seals replacement and are now weeping then something must be wrong there.

Yeah but only for M54 engines.

I'm currently out of stock on seals, but will be ordering more in Jan.

Sweet, put me down for a swap. Can I arrange an advance payment for them?

heven, you wont need to replace the vanos seals again, just get the o-rings from bmw, o-rings are generally not that expensive at all.

Don, are you based in cpt? Do you want me to do the swap for you?

Ok thanks very much for all your help. Just one quick question...Do I change all o rings again or just the ones that I am going to disturb or can I just change the ones that I was too impatient to wait for? Can cover 6 be removed just by its self? Or do I have to do the hole vanos removal again?
Lol that was a couple of questions

I am in CPT, in the Plattekloof Glen area. If you could swap them out that would be great. Im not sure if the price has changed, if you could confirm. I also PMed you guys about the stickers :excited:

you should only need to replace o-rings and seals that are old or my be damage during removal and refitment. Over time the o-rings become brittle from the heat etc, so when you disturb them its very easy to cause damage, thus it is better to simply replace.

Hey guys how do you know when its time to change these seals/o rings.
does the vanos timing have to be done again or can i do it myself

I did my seals cause I had an oil leak. So if you dont have an oil leak I dont think it will need changing. And yes it can be done yourself but you will need special tools.

Yes leaks at the Vanos. In two places. It was in between the vanos and head and also through the solenoid covers. The o rings were the cause.
