VANOS refurb/seals - E36 3.2 KZN?

Hi all,

Posting in the M forum instead of Z's (Z3MC), as theres more here sharing the engine (S50B32).

I've noticed two minor oil leaks on my M.
First is on the drivers side toward the 5th/6th cyl, suspect its the CPV/constant pressure valve and is a cheap and minor replacement so going to get that done (o-rings breakup).

Second is the VANOS. Dealer tightened all the nuts and cleaned the oil so monitoring that - but 95% sure the seals are shot and need to be replaced (also evidence of oil leak on the back of the VANOS, so those seals also done). Also have a pretty rough idle lately, which I suspect is related to the seals.

Way I see it is I have a few options:
1. order a VITON o-ring kit for the car and have it done myself or locally.
2. send the vanos off to the US / DR Vanos or UK / MR Vanos
3. local services?

Downside of the DIY approach, is that you don't get to do the modified bearing/gearings which apparently remove the rattle and improve the vanos.

Not too phased by that, though would be nice to have it done.

Any suggestions for a Dbn/Kzn based company who can handle the VANOS work? I could take it to any old mechanic but would much rather use someone who has been doing the VANOS refurbs for a while (Sir Sparky/Freerider etc) but KZN based?

Ideally would want to avoid shipping the vanos off to US/UK if not necessary.

Thoughts?

Ok you can go with aftermarket seals and o rings. But its going to take a month to get here. When I did my vanos I used BMW seals. The parts from BMW are cheap less then R 500 I got everything. The stuff that's expensive is the tappet cover gasket that needs to be replaced when you do the vanos. I did mine at Bimmerworks. He charged me R 1000 for labour. Its good to get it done after doing mine the car feels so much better.

Lil off the topic... Since your in Durbs are you going to make in for thr run on the 4 Sept?

Won't make it for the 4th Sept run, thanks - out of town this weekend.

Thanks for the feedback on it!

Decided to go with the MrVanos/UK seal kit.

I've already purchased a set of the new bolts from BMW, still in their packaging so will look to sell those off as I'd prefer to go with the uprated/MrVanos seals and bolts.

Spoke to my indy whom I trust, and he's done work on the vanos units before so likely will give it to him to tackle for me.

Thanks again!
