Tyres, the good, bad and ugly

Hi all, just need to make 100% sure before I do the replacement on BMW X5 3.0 2008 - I would like to stick to Bridgestone's RFT, not 100% sure for which to go? Any suggestions - Potenza / Turanza.

Had the pleasure of driving my Z4 with the new GY eagle F1 A2. Fantastic grip and cornering.

Just a question, it seems that the car grips so much that I need to have my hands on the wheel always. Is it just in my head or can better grip tyres make the car feel like it's going everywhere on uneven road??

This is what a Falken tyre did on my M5 when it was exposed to 250

WitM512_zps3d6e0c2b.jpg

From that day on, I vowed to never fit a pick 'n pay tyre to any car that can go over 200
And btw - The pressure was checked that same morning and it was also W speed rated, so it was not negligence at all.

My all time favorite tyre was the Yokohama A539

They did not give a lot of mileage, but wet grip was phenomenal

I bought a set of 17"rims from a buddy that had a cheap tyre fitted(Hero). The noise from the tyre is insane. I cud never tell if it was my wheel bearings or just the tyre rumble. Bridgestones has always been a good choice for me as my pocket doesn't stretch as far as yoko's or mich's.

i just went to get my two front tyres replaced 215/40R18 - 135i

asked them to balance the back ones at the same time. still about 5000km left in the rears. the one rear tyre has a nail in it near the side. tyre guy asks me if a warning light has come on because the nail looks right through. they pull the nail out, and you can see the steel in the tyre as the nail did a bit of damage. the bridgestone rft still held its pressure and had they not taken the wheel off i would never have known. the strength of these RFT's are incredible.

now i have also hit a few potholes on our wonderful roads. i remember my audi s3 with non-rft's ended up with buckled rims. i asked them to check my 135i rims for buckles as the potholes i have hit with the bmw were hectic. rims were perfect with no sign of buckles. the bridgestone rft's are awesome imo.

if i had any non-rft tyre on my car instead of the rft's, i would have been changing a wheel on the side of the road and i would be purchasing or repairing buckled rims.

i stick with bridgestone rft's as these are what my car was tested with by bmw. they have tons of money to spend on R & D. I dont need to do my own

+1000 I've hit many potholes in the 160 000km or so I have done on RFTs. No rim damage...

Makes you wonder how thick these tyres are :fencelook:

seems you guys are lucky, I bought my tractor second hand, some how the previous owner managed to buckle of 4 rims, nothings impossible lol.

but I agree with everyone, run flats are a god send with the roads we have

Tyre prices are sick. Fitted 2 new rft rears on the E90 last week, 255/35/18 Michelins at R7180. Not bad considering the second cheapest place in Durban was R10 200. But still, my poor credit card

Hey bud,

It shouldn't be due to the tyres, you might just be noticing it more now?

Normally it happens due to LSD etc.

Can we make 2 polls, one for top few run flats, and one for top few non runflats, so us bmwfanatics know what tyre is best

Perhaps we could organize to buy from a distibutor as a group, and the site can generate a few bucks from it without F*ing anyone over, or if anyone on the forum with a shop selling tyre's already could give good prices so we could all buy from ?

Or is this against forum rules? If it is just delete this post, I'm so sorry, I dont know the ins and outs :fencelook:

Are you describing tram-lining? Often happens when going up a tire size and the new tires just wanna follow all the groves in the road.

On my current e90 330i I replaced my bridgestone run flats with continental run flats and I have to say I did not know you get so comfortable run flats, they are excellent and highly recommended to anybody that wants a comfortable quiet run flat tyre, plus they are pretty cheap too 17 inch goes for like R1650!

As far as normal tyres go the only one I had major problem with was the velocity tyres from tiger wheel and tyre on my e46 facelift 318i,those velocity tyres are absolutely pathetic,I had blow outs, buckled rims, and multiple punctures on all four tires.Be warned guys dont ever ever fit Velocity tyres.

When I eventually replaced them with Barum's I didn't have any issues at all,I even at the end fitted some chinese tyre with no issue.
