Tyre choice

Hi all

Ok, so my 2007 320i will be up for a new set of tyres soon.

I've got the standard 17 inch rim with Bridgestone 225's.

The car is on 39000kms and I reckon I've probably got another 3000km before I need to replace the tyres. I rotate my tyres every 10000km

Two questions:

A) Is this average mileage for these tyres?

B) Any suggestions on replacement tyres that would give better longevity?

Sounds like you are running with run-flats on that mileage. The compound on those tires are much harder and this proned to greater wear. Just an fyi, you don't specifically have to buy run flats. See the attached link: Runflat Tyre Technology.. Have a look at Q&A # 6.

It would still work out being much more cost effective to get a Space-Saver from the agents (+/- R3400) and a set of non-RFTs than a new set of RFTs. Check tyretraders.co.za site for some prices to give you an idea.

When I rotated mine the steering felt so weird. That was thanks to the inner wear of tires being at the back and now on the front. It would steer it self on uneven surfaces. After a week I rotated them to what they were and then just got new tires for the back once the old ones were done.

I've decided I'm going to try and swop left and right to try and spread the wear. Don't you get the same thing? Maybe there something wrong with my car :mmm:

If you rotate after 10 000Km there should not be much wear on the edges unless your alignment is out.

My E30 the rear camber was off so the rears wore the insides first but it handles so much better with the camber :)

Rotating more frequently would be better than every 10000 km - maybe every 5000 km instead. Front to rear rotation, but left to right rotation, just be careful that the tyres don't have a directional requirement.

The wear you're getting is about average for runflats. My first set I got 60 000 Kms - mostly highway driving. Second set i got 30 000 Kms. :censored: Mostly town driving.

I like to keep my car as standard as possible, also the suspension system was designed with runflats in mind. It may get a little pricey but the sports pack is worth it (assume that's what you've got) :thumb:

@Nate Yeah I'm using runflats.

@Nic_s I think that regularly checking the tyre pressure and ensuring that the alignment is correct has prevented my tyres from wearing unevenly. To be honest, I'm a bit pedantic about this!

@applehero I don't have the sportpack (would have been nice! but I bought the car as a demo) I do tend to agree about keeping things as standard as possible.

@Philip Foglar Have you replaced your runflats with normal tyres, or do you know of people who have done this? Was there much difference to the car, are there any problems etc?

What I would like to know (sorry about barging in like this) is if normal tires will give a much softer ride (absorbing bumps and making the best of rough surfaces). My E90 320i has run flats and is very unforgiving on rough services. Potholes and bumps don't help much either. I've got Continentals at the moment. Someone did tell me that if you want normal tires that you have to disable the run flat sensor or you risk messing up the on-board computer or something.

Haven't yet, my Conti RFTs still have a fair amount of meat on them so may let them run for a bit but I can't stand the tramlining and the noisy tyres up front which are as old as the car itself. But from everything that I have read (and most members here have ditched RFTs) the ride improves with non-RFTs, less noise and not nearly (or no more) tramlining. Problems, none that I can recall reading - just invest in the space-saver and even the BMW mobility kit which includes an electrical compressor.

Not too sure, but knowing the stealers it probably won't be as cheap as getting a normal electric pump and puncture repair kit from Game or so. I reckon if you have the space-saver you're pretty much covered in the event of a puncture. I always just carry and electric pump for that extra piece of mind. Still have to order my space-saver and then will see about finally ditching the RFTs.

Thanks for this post Philip. Always thought tramlining was due to the fact that I had a sports suspension. Will most def be switching to Non-RFT when I due for a new set.

Please report back on the ride comfort after you have replaced the RFT. Thanks. I think I will do the same but would like feedback on the differences...
