type of oil

Hi
I have a 2001 BMW 318i (E46) with high mileage, over 320 000kms and I would like to know what oil to use. Did the head last week and then put in 10W 40 oil synthetic oil but it sounds like the oil is too thin for the engine.
Is it the correct oil for a car with such high mileage or should i be using something else?

Hi

What oil did you put in? Also when you say Synthetic do you mean Fully Synthetic?

What oil does the car normally run on, as in what was in the motor before the oil change?

Can you describe the sound it is no making and when it makes it?

If it uses oil, no need to buy expensive oil as the motor just burns it away.

No offence mate but that is the dumbest reply I have ever read on this forum.

LOL, dumb mite be abit harsh there, i think he means in a sense that it looses like a litre of oil every 3rd day or something than its pointless to use an expensive oil as the engine wud, as he said, just burn it away. Than again if your engine does loose that amount of oil in that time period, than do something about your engine!!!

If it was Castrol Edge - then you are correct, our older high mileage motors do not like this crap oil at all.

Change it to Magnatec sport, SLX or Shell - Shell on advice seen on similar threads on this forum - I've only used SLX and TXT with any success. The M43TU engine runs very very hot, hotter that the I6's, this destroys the oil in no time at all.

Not actually, you can use the most expensive oil in our motor one day when it burnt two litres a week and then we talk again........
so let's leave it there because you will just piss me off.

I think its more likely that there's a hole in the sump if you lose that much.

I say, don't bother with oil, just run it on Prolong and PS23.

I will also help you to re-sleeve you cylinder with coke cans if you like. Also, never use gap-less rings, bloudraad is better.

If you need more folksy wisdom, mail me.

are you honestly saying that if you car uses oil you should just put crap in there too damage the rest of the engine?

what if the CCV is causing it to use oil does it really make sense to damage the engine to save money on oil... this is very bad advice...

Why would I piss you off? Because I know twice as much about oil than you do and that frankly, even with a car that uses 2 litres of oil a week I would still want the best oil in my vehicle.

There are two things on cars that you never skimp on, ever and thats oil and tyres.

Its that simple, the OP is using oil, which means he has a problem with his BMW and your brilliant recommendation is to chuck the cheapest oil you can find into his motor further aggravating the original issue and potentially damaging his vehicle?

So whilst I shouldn't p*ss you off, please do the same courtesy as not to give forum members poor advice and in turn p*ss me off.
