Two weeks later car is at BMW

So the saga is still ongoing.

Went in today to check gearbox after I drove 500+km after oil change. I could have told them the same day they changed the oil that the box is still the same but I guess they have to follow procedure.

Current outcome is that Auto Atlantic have put in a request for a replacement gearbox. There is a box in Jhb so if it is approved then box should be here in CT on Wednesday, Thursday to remove current box and replacement fitted on Friday.

Hey Freakazoid.
I'm sitting reading your posts and I can't believe how similar your saga is to mine. It's unreal. The good news is I DID get a new box eventually. Took about 2 months of back and forth to BMW. Have you met with anyone from ZF yet? Usually a ZF representative will come out and drive with you so you can demo the issues. The reason why your car felt worse after you got it back after the flush is that the Adaptation values for the box are reset to 0 the box then "learns" your driving style then adapts it's shift control logic accordingly. Mine was also super rough and jerky when shifting but it's DID get better. BUT my tale of woe continues I now have a ridiculously hard down shift as I come to a stop at a traffic light etc. I have had the soft wear reloaded and the adaptation values reset 4 times. Runs great for about 500km and the problem comes back. Short of taking the ENTIRE drivetrain out I don't see how it's gonna be solved. Patience is a virtue I guess. You are not alone brother! Hope it's gets sorted !

Oh boy, so you still sitting with problems even with a new box?

The new gearbox is only coming today so my car will only be worked on next week.

I have a couple of rumbling sounds which seem to come from the drive train and sometimes I can feel it on the steering wheel. I really hope that all the noises, shudders are related to the gearbox as I have no lus to constantly take the car in. Already I think I need wheel bearings as I can hear a squeaking noise which increases in intensity as I pick up speed.

Sounds like a nasty issue, might be worth seeing what the people on E90post have experienced with this - there are tons of people there with all sort of issues, so very possible that you may find a solution there too...

So car went in yesterday to replace box. Was told it will take two days. Got a call this afternoon that the reprogramming is going to take 9 hours :argh:

Auto Atlantic then contacted BMW SA and they managed to do the reprogramming in an hour  Techie then takes the car for a test drive and picks up a misfire :argh: So at least another day with out car.

This is getting really frustrating having only bought the car end of November and having taken it in constantly every month. The reason I traded in the 320 as to get something more reliable. My wife's family, all Merc drivers, are having a field day ragging me for getting another BMW. My wife is also not impressed and I guess I am sleeping in the spare room tonight

Never great when you car isn't well . I do hope it turns out better ASAP bud . Hang in there

It's only been two days but I am having withdrawal symptoms. I miss driving the car even though it would have been in peak hour traffic.

When I spoke to them this morning and they said they were on track to finish by this afternoon I was already picturing pressing the start button and hearing the engine roar.

So I got the car back this afternoon. The served advisor took me through the job card because there were a couple of other issues picked up and repaired :dropjaw:

So the following were done:
  • Gearbox replaced
  • Battery, dead cell, replaced
  • Water pump leaking, replaced
  • Engine misfire, spark plugs replaced

I was sure I could smell anti-freeze but thought I was imagining my self. Seems I was right. Same with misfire. Thought I was being pedantic. Car idles and drives smoothly now.

Now for the "knock me out cold" part. Did not see the final invoice but gearbox with some bolt kit was R85 000 :dropjaw: and water pump was R5 300. They going to email the final invoice to me but I bet Motorplan is in for over R100k on this job. Thank God for MP :joy:

well the good news is that BMW just replaced the common problems on your car, waterpump + Sparkplugs... gearbox is just an added bonus... also all replaced parts now carry a 2 year warrantee on it even post motorplan...

get out there and enjoy your car!

And freak! My tale of woe has ended! My car must be female cos I had a little melt down after another series of shitty hard downshifts from the new box. And guess what? It's running like a dream shifts beautifully no jerking no shuddering I have fallen In love with it all over again! The 335i and 135i are the finest driving machines Ever when they are on song! Take no notice of the merc freaks:thumbdo:they don't know shit! Gimme a slightly loopy BM over a maSEWERAGE Benz any day!! hang in there brother it's well worth it! Especially that you still have motor plan!

How long was it before you gearbox became smooth? My upshifts are smooth as butter, with the odd jerk from 2nd to 3rd. Downshifts are a bit jerky especially when coming to a dead stop.

Hey Freak.
The ZF rep I dealt with stated that the minimum kilometer count required for an adaptation cycle is 90km. So after the replacement of my box the shifting was also rough. The box soft wear does an adaption value snap shot every 300 to 400 shifts as it learns your driving style. It's then uses that info to shift at the most optimum time. Realistically my box took about 200km to really settle down. I also started driving in DS and MS A LOT more. And would vary driving from the standard mundane to more "spirited" etc. That seemed to do the trick the box is FINE now. No hiccups whatsoever. It's note the most comfy ride when driving in traffic in DS but I'm my opinion it helped the box by allowing it to adapt to as many variables as possible. Plus in DS you can REALLY show your merc driving family what the 335i is all about:bravo: good luck dude!

I guess that's why I was required to drive 500km when they reset the software previously. Most of my driving since getting it back was in stop/go peak hour traffic, need to do some "hooligan" trips. Don't want the box to adapt to granny mode :=):

I must say with the new box and plugs the car is crazy in DS mode :praise:

Guys, I've been having similar symptoms on my e90 335i auto. On startup in the mornings, sounds like a horse startup and upshifting is jerky. I initially thought I was imaging things, but after reading this tread, I have to get it checkout. Im still under MP and I hope I dont get excuses from the dealership. Any advice for me.

When I picked up the problem in December, the first time I took it in they re-flashed the software. Got the car back and still felt the same. So the next time I took the car in I asked them to bring the Workshop manager to the car. When I started it and he heard the noise he immediately said something wrong with the gearbox. They also picked up an error code for the gearbox.

My car had a metallic sound, like gears sticking, and I physically felt it when I started the car. The upshifts and downshifts were jerky and it felt like a newbie driver releasing the clutch too soon.

With the new gearbox the shifting is smooth. Not F30 type smooth but still barely noticeable.
