Was on my yearly long trip up country two weeks ago and whilst driving along at a sedate 120kph, was wondering wat revs the turbo on my 2003 E39 530d was doing at that speed. I assume that on a level road the turbo is sort of idling along, maybe at 50 - 80 000 revs??? On a slight incline it would probably stay at those revs but with the variable vanes automatically adjusting to pushing slightly more air??
Anyone with real knowledge about turbos, if i drive like an old man and try not to rev the guts out of the engine, will the turbo be still good as new at 200 000km??
Btw, got 16,4km/l travelling from Bloem to Durban, including the hour i stood bumber to bumber just the other side of Pietermaritzburg. On the trip back up to Bloem, got 15km/l, calculated on filling the tank (617km needed 37,4l and up to Bloem it was 618km and 41 odd litres) sticking to all the speed limits and travelling with the speed control on at all times where possible.
