Turbo problems

Good day fanatics,

I own a 2002 e46 330d (d1), recently bought a new engine (88 000 km) due to the fact that the original engine had a crack in the block. We fitted the engine this weekend passed, engine runs smooth :tiptoe: , no problems at all. Started at first try, as I took the car for a test drive, I noticed that there isn't any turbo boost, not sure if its working because you don't hear the turbo as you accelerate, Yes the turbo is in working condition, as I said I bought a new engine which came with the turbo so now currently I have two turbo's, the current turbo that's in the car at this moment is my old one which I know doesn't have a problem at all.

Any advice what could be the cause of the turbo not working?

Thanks,

Two engines means extra spares for my 6'er:rollsmile::tiptoe:

Your first step would be to run diagnostics, because there could be many guesses.

What can the most common stuff be to check? I checked the two vacuum pipes that by the turbo, swapped it, but still the same?

And inspect all pipes for vacuum leaks.

Check all the boost pipes for leaks. Also, the steel egr pipes should be leak free as it makes quite a difference to the pulling power if there is a leak there. Small rubber vacuum lines should also be leak free, even the ones to the engine mountings, egr, etc. Yours is still the vacuum operated turbo, so if there is no leak there, check that the sensors are all connected. I had a rat eat the wiring off the sensor at the back of the engine under the inlet manifold which led to the turbo vanes not being activated which led to a lot of power loss. Also fuel rail pressure sensor could be faulty. I would start with the boost and vacuum pipes, as those are the cheapest to replace/repair. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice, took it for diagnostics yesterday, but everything is fine on the computer, absolutely no warnings or problems, Its just not working. I didn't mention it is a import motor.

Maybe recheck the direction of the vacuum, like check that he vacuum pipes are connected correctly. We had an issue on a 320d where the pipes were incorrectly connected and caused the car to have late turbo or none at all.

EGR line connected properly or blanked off correctly.
Boost lines to intercooler connected properly.
Boost pipe to inlet manifold connected properly.

Map sensor connected behind inlet manifold connected.

Would you want to sell that spare exhaust manifold?

Not to hijack the thread but we have a brand new imported cast iron exhaust manifold complete with all gaskets, studs, bolts, etc., that my son bought in the UK for his X5 which in the end was a leaking injector pipe that caused the smoking. I could ask him if he wants to sell and what his price is if you do not come right with Bavarian

Thx for the manifold.

Did you get your issues resolved.
How is your brakes? If hard and almost no stopping power. Then it could be your vacuum pump.
Hard brakes and no turbo spool equals bust vacuum pump or a serious leak on the vacuum lines.

If you can hear the turbo spool but boost does not build you most likely have a connection between inlet or intercooler or turbo and intercooler that is cracked or poorly connected.

I normally spray a little quick start close to the connections. The motor will pick up revs as soon as a leak sucks in the quick start.

Check all your wire connectors are plugged in.

Hope something here helps.
