TPMS tyre pressure + temp

Newbie to the forum and need some help from the F20 M135/140 fundies...

Got myself an alpine white SE M140i a week ago and absolutely loving it but this run-in is taking forever LOL.

Just have a question about the TPMS system in the infotainment/iDrive menu (I have the pro nav)... I see overseas some guys have the tyre pressure + temp menu but mine only shows the tyre colour and no pressure or temp...

Is this available in SA and do i need to have this option coded like some of the overseas guys...apparently a hit and miss option from BMW...

Your car has an indirect TPMS.
It uses ABS sensors to detect the rotational speeds of all 4 wheels. Some simple math shows that speed is a function of the rolling circumference of the wheel. If one of the wheels start spinning faster or slower than the rest, it means that its circumference, in relation to the other 3 wheels, is out of sync with the rest. This is how the TPMS can identify the wheel that has the puncture. It is important that the system is reset after all 4 tyres have had their pressures checked, so that the system calibrates to what is the "correct" rotational wheel speed (actually, the speed in relation to each other) for all 4.

The fancier system you mention is a direct TPMS. This monitors the individual pressure of each wheel by itself, independently of the rest. This is a more expensive system, since it does not simply leverage off the existing ABS wheel sensors.

The one that shows Pressure + Temperature is optional on some models and standard on some top end models.

It is available in SA as an option.

Was around R4800 on my F22.

I had the indirect system on my Audi TT Mk2 for 5 years.
Also have the indirect system on my CX5 since 2016.
In all cases, it picked up loss of pressure accurately and pointed out the offending wheel. To be honest, the Mazda system worked better than the Audi - had a glitch or two every few months.

On my F30 since 2018 Jan, I have had no issues with the indirect system. Touch wood, my 18s have been well behaved.

The direct system, in my view, is more suited to off roading vehicles, where the actual pressure per wheel is more important to know at all times.

It still works fine on my 13yr old BMW 1 Series, never gave a problem all these years.

You can have BMW fit the kid for you, It should include the 4x wheel sensors and 1x receiver module. It would as need to be activated on your cars iDrive software.
A DIY might be cheaper but could possibly affect your MP. :thumbs:
