I would say sell the 3

I agree on the Three. It ate its battery over the weekend, and has now overstayed its welcome. :RedNo:

It only comes as a 3.5l V6, with or without hybrid milk float motor attached. But I am not interested in that sort of complication. There is like a giant laptop battery underneath the back seat. Sooner or later it wears out and will no longer charge.

Actually, it makes a surprisingly good husbandmobile as well. With 207kW underneath the right hand pedal, it is quite nippy off the line. And the sound system by Mark Levinson is very, very nice.

Pretty potent then. I'm sold on that Mark Levinson alone. BMW has lots to catch up soundwise. Nice choice bud, enjoy it.

I enjoyed reading this story:clapper: Kudos to the OP for taking the time to put a lot of thought and effort into writing this post:=):

I would say, keep the ones that are most economical to maintain, i.e the E46 or E39.

Hi all

I can report that the E39 is back on the road. The water leak was quite serious and a new radiator was fitted. The second time I have had to to that. Such is life with Bavaria's finest cooling systems. It also needed a new battery - seems like the stinking tracker unit killed it while parked.

I used the car for the office run today. It was a bit of an adjustment to drive a stick shift again but all is well.

Er, not quite. There are still some problems. I am looking at a triage to fix them. Here is the bad news:
  • that ABS controller is still a zombie (it comes back to life for a short while when it is very cold but dies as soon as the engine heats it up again)
  • there is a nasty oil leak or two
  • while parked in the garage, something fell on the rear fender and there is a small dent to show for it
  • some weirdness on the dash regarding blown rear bulbs or (more likely) broken wires in the loom going into the bootlid
  • broken tail light
  • front inner wheel liners in a very sorry now state
  • driver's door rubber well past its best days
  • a few unsightly scratches on the rear bumper
  • gator around gear lever refuses to stay in place, the plastic thing holding it keeps jumping out
  • SII says it is time for an oil transfusion

At least the tyres weren't flat spotted while the car was parked. I did move it around from the time to time to prevent this. Also, the fuel in the tank did not turn into wood varnish.

The decision is now more or less unanimous that E46 will go when the big 5 is all sorted. I am also looking at fixing the very worst problems on that before it goes. The left front window mechanism is kapoet and it also needs an oil change.

When all that is done I can attend to the E32. She is not currently mobile as she needs a new battery. I seems like I am on a car battery buying binge this year.
