To modify or not to modify that is the question

I am toying with the idea of modifying the M5 and having heard Jeff's beauty am interested in the RGM stage 1 mod. The fact that it comes with a warranty is quite an attraction as well . The one has savspeed as well so the question remains SAV or RGM .

Which one and why or is it a case of different strokes for different folks ?
Hows about some input Jeff ?

Marked difference in power ?
Reliability ?

It all depends:

Forget about the "who - se" kit.

1. Firstly, the most important question: What is your goal?

2. Secondly, what do you understand by Stage 1...? If your understanding is that Stage 1 for most are:

* Tune
* Induction kit
* Exhaust & Decats

3. Stage 1, is normally the furthest that owners with luxury cars are prepared to go. Unless your answer to my first question is different.

4. Brings me back to your goal.

Look forward to your thoughts :thumbs:

Got some interesting news from the guys over at RGM this morning :) Finally got around to emailing them on what has actually all been done to the car.

It was in the shop in 2007 for the stage 1 conversion, which consists of:

  • RGM stainless steel performance exhaust system
  • Remapping of the engine electronics. Both ignition, timing and fuel
  • Performance BMC filters
  • Speed governor removed, allowing the M5 to reach the 300km/h+ mark

That's what's been done to mine. Can't really comment on Sav conversions purely because I haven't personally dealt with them. My mods, as small as they are, do make a massive difference.

I'm running a UniQ chip, combined with the exhaust does make a noticeable difference. Obviously a stock M5 has grunt, and pulls like a demon - but with the conversion it gives you an more manic kind of feeling under your arse :)

It does keep the M5's split personality. If you want to drop the kids off at school and go to the track, you can still do that without compromising road handling. Cruising speed is quiet, still some cabin noise because the V8 noise has been increased with the exhaust, but you can still have a normal conversation without having the feeling you're sitting in a fully spec'd race car.

So definitely a marked increase in performance on the car - reliability I haven't had any issues. Clutch and flywheel barred obviously, but that's simply because I was driving pedal to the metal, all the time :p

So I'd say it's safe to say that the mods are reliable. They aren't weakening the engine or pushing massive performance gains. There have been a million debates online whether or not oiled filters kill your MAF sensors. Mine seem fine, cleaned them out a few months back and had the normal dust, and the BMC oiled filters that RGM install have been sitting there since '07.

In summary though, (and I know this is a long post, sorry) is the exhaust note. It's changed and is louder than stock. Cold start I'm idling at 1500rpm, which does wake the neighbours up and rattle my garage door. You can hear you're driving a V8 when you put your foot down but cruising speed is normal.

Hope that helps a bit, and have fun!

Thats good feedback Jeff. I think we are saying the same thing in my Post #6.

Its not a "conversion" we are talking about. We need to demystify this. Its only:

* Exhaust
* Air filter
* Tune

Right? There is nothing "special" about Stage 1 that is being done to the M5...Right? I am not referring to the power gains etc...but to whats being done on the car.

I hear alot about RGM & SAV speed "conversions" but when you really ask the right questions then there is no mystery to it. Sorry for being pedantic about this.

Correcto's, what you list above is exactly what's been done to my M5. I think the confusion comes in when companies sell/ market the mods package as a conversion.

In this case, RGM sold my package as their stage 1 conversion.

@bmwforlife: As another options chat to Rolf at Promotec and Mike at Definitive Auto for some options :)

Ok! Here is my list of changes and each one however small has helped in one or other way.

iats_air.jpg

The first is to open up the airboxes, you remove the Air channel left and right marked in green and you use the following ram pipes to drop down directly into the wheel well in front of the wheel arch, marked in blue.

Got this from big boss auto.

Next will be the IATS Air Temperature Sensor (IATS) Relocation Kit (v2), got mine here
http://www.beastpower.com/p/bmw/ufmotorsport-s62/UF-BE39M-IATS
Relocates the sensor to the marked red part. And connected to the DME below the carbon filter on the RHS marked in yellow cutting out the standard sensor.

After these changes the car idled smoother, no more jerky pullaways and reved easier.

As for filters I have done a lot of research and it has been proven that the OEM air filters allow just as much air through as the after market filters without the possible problems that can occur from using after market filters.

Next was a decat and replaced cats with straight pipes (from the headers to just before the Y resonator), with oxygen sensors in place. And a Excede software remap (The 250km/h speed restriction was removed) this gave me a 62.6kW and 92Nm gain, the car has a nice growl to it now and is a true Beast.

Almost forgot one thing put in CAI Ports and made them black so that they are not to prominent, but are not connected directly, just for better cooler air flow.

And quiet a few things still to come...

Keep us posted on the developments. And you have to chose 1kW more than me :p But I do think I need a dyno to confirm the figures... for now though, help me sleep at night and 322kW :biglol:
