Unfortunately, you simply cannot trust the judgement of the average mechanic working at BMW. I was present when BMW inspected my m3 and if it was not for me being there, several things would have gone unnoticed.
I would be happy to give an opinion on the car if it would help at all as I'm in Cape Town.
Thanks for all the help and advice. I have some offers to check out the car which I think is the way to go. Then at least I can make a more informed decision once someone who knows the M3 has taken a look.
I have had an E36 M3, E36 M3 race car and also an E39 M5 in the past. I was super excited to have an E46 M3 so this whole deal has been a bit of a let down. But hearing from you guys has given me some direction on how to proceed.
