To keep or not to keep? E46 M3?

I'm very sorry to hear this.

Unfortunately, you simply cannot trust the judgement of the average mechanic working at BMW. I was present when BMW inspected my m3 and if it was not for me being there, several things would have gone unnoticed.

I would be happy to give an opinion on the car if it would help at all as I'm in Cape Town.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I have some offers to check out the car which I think is the way to go. Then at least I can make a more informed decision once someone who knows the M3 has taken a look.

I have had an E36 M3, E36 M3 race car and also an E39 M5 in the past. I was super excited to have an E46 M3 so this whole deal has been a bit of a let down. But hearing from you guys has given me some direction on how to proceed.

Thanks for all the help guys.

If anyone ever needs a car checked out in Salt Lake City, USA then just shout. One of my best mates is the part owner, car builder and driver for a local race team. He knows BMW's inside and out... literally!

That is rough, those rubbers look terrible almost like they were submerged for an extended period of time. A 67000km car should not have these issues you would not think. I have 95000km on my 2005 M5 and I see none of what you are seeing in that interior.

Sorry bud, I would bet money on the mileage being incorrect.

If you want I can get you the Motorplan History, which will help get an idea if the mileage is indeed correct.

Thanks guys, that is what I thought when I saw the pics.

A forum member looked up some info for me. The 65,000 mileage is correct but the car is listed as having 6 owners not the 1 as advertised.

I got taken. Damn. First time ever in a long history of buying cars sight unseen on the internet that the car wasn't what I expected. Oh well. Live and learn.

Based on these pics the car looks in a general all round poor condition regardless of the mileage, iam sitting on 170k and it's nowhere close to this...but then iam only the third owner

Yeah that is rough. Name and shame this lying seller................

Sucks that such a good car has been unappreciated and shown no love.:RedNo:

That check is not 100% fool proof, and I still think the mileage has been doctored. The door rubbers is actually a common issue, that happens due to age. Ludicrously expensive to replace, but common. The titan shadow trim also bubbles and peels wth age.

Sorry that this is turning out this way.

Working on it! Of course it always depends on how much money and energy you are willing to throw at the process.

Thanks for the info on the door rubbers. Never seen that here in the US. Wonder if they source different product for the North American market. But yes... pricey stuff. ZAR 6,000 per side for new rubber trim.

I only found this forum after I had committed to the purchase. If I can get this deal reversed I will be back looking for a clean M3!

I'll say. Usually 1 owner cars are in great shape...oh wait, this turned out to have 6 owners!

If I manage to get this deal reversed then I will post the seller info so no one this board gets burned. Right now would prefer to hold of doing that until I get some resolution one way or the other.

Ask for your money back.
Going to give that a try and see if I have any success. Would rather do that than try to unravel the mess that this car seems to be. We shall see how that goes.

If you can bring the car close to where we are then I can verify the actual mileage on the other modules. Definitely placing my money on it being doctored. Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Its a terrible situation to be in.

That can not be a +60 000 km car , Im not sure if the M3 and the E46 Sedans had anything in common but my E46 has over 220 000kms and suffers non of what you have shown in the pictures , And my car has kids ( my nieces ) jumping around in it . One thing that my car is suffering from now is the A pillars are bubbling.

I wonder maybe this car spent a lot of time parked in the hot baking sun? Check the motor-plan and see what was its last mileage on its last service , that usually gives a good indication on what the cars mileage should be.

Do our E46s Speedometers mark a change in mileage with a dot next to the numbers?

Horrible situation to be in . I would try and return it .

If you change either the dash, EWS or LCM with that of another car then yes, it'll throw up a tamper dot. But it's relatively easy to prevent this from happening if you are the unscrupulous sort, while giving the car a haircut at the same time.

I'm really sorry to see this happen; I see such practices all the time and there's very little that upsets me more than seeing this illegal practice taking place.

Good luck dude, I hope you come to some sort of resolution hey.
