Lol Rommies, you saved me a whole lot of digging there mate!:roflol: Thanks!

This is what I am considering, although the white leather puts me off a bit.:thumbdo:

Morne, in Rommies thread you said a big difference between the 2005 and the 2006, any particular reason? Was there a mechanical upgrade somewhere along the line?

It's so long ago, I can't remember all the detail except that they changed to the new key from the old "diamond" key. I do remember that the SMG box was awesome when you gave it stick and absolutely rubbish in traffic, and fuel consumption of 28l/100km after my short stint on the highway. :dropjaw: Not a car I would buy now though. I would rather have an e90 M3 LCi. :fencelook:

:fencelook: Frigging hell!!! Still, I suppose when you buy a car like this it's not to save fuel is it?

There aren't too many E90 LCis around are there?

Nope. :( And production ceased in 2011, I think.

My biggest issue was the running costs...the parts are insanely expensive!

Ps: Oh and it doesn't have a oil dipstick. So your oil level works with a sensor...and guess what happens when the sensor doesn't work and your oil level is low....?!?!
Then we play that knock knock game:
Knock Knock
Who's there?
Rod
Rod who???
CONROD!!

:roflol: Yeah, my M3 is the same, no dipstick, confused the hell out of the petrol attendant the first time I had to top up oil! LMAO!!!

I saw someone mention on your thread about getting a decent after market warranty to cover the BIG parts, like gearbox, diff etc. which would obviously play a MAJOR role in whether I do this or not.

I must admit, the M3 wins in the looks department

And you've got F10 AND E60!

I'm a performance chaser

The M3 will become a classic I'm sure of it.

I say, if you can afford it, go for it. You don't have to keep it forever. Experience it, enjoy it a couple of months, then sell it on and get something else. You'll never know until you've given it a try

I say do it! If you get one with MP then I guess thats one worry off your shoulder? And like everyone else says... You dont buy an M5 to save on fuel, if you want to save on fuel go buy one of those 3 cylinder diesel Polo's

I think I am going to look for one,but I will be patient. In the meantime I am going to work the M3 a little, and if I sell it return it to stock. But I am going to see if I can find out that's decent. If I can't, then so be it.

I have owned 4 M cars. The E60 M5 is the worst M car I have owned, purely in terms of reliability.

The car cost 140k in MP bills over the 5 months I owned it.

In short, Dont.

I would leave the M3 standard and unscathed by mods as it will fetch a better price if it is to be sold in preference to the M5.

As you correctly stated the new cars will come with turbos and smaller capacities in line with emmission and consumption requirements so if you can live with an unusual gearbox.........buy it.

Ouch!!! That's scary.....that's the cost of a small family hatch!

From my experience, I say do it. Had no problems at all. Done nearly 90k in the E60, no hassles yet.

fuel consumption is not a question you should ask

Best reply yet. I agree 100%. My Mcoupe felt like a TATA Indicar compared to the M5's.

The M3 is newer, handles better, looks better, has a gearbox that your can't even compare to the old SMG, is better on fuel, way more nimble/lively in your hands and is way ahead in technology.

Nothing wrong with the M5 is an awesome car but the M3 makes more sense at this time.

As for the M3 feeling like a chico or Tata, have any M5 owners tired a decently modded NA M3? It's not a pretty sight.

Had to give my two cents worth here. Sold my M6 two days ago. What a car. As a package there is very little that can compete in its price bracket. The power is intoxicating, but it's the added luxury and practicality that makes it a fantastic all rounder . looking for an e92 M3 to continue my M journey in.

Unfortunately It isn't all positive when one has to describe that v10 and smg box. Personally I wouldn't even think about running the e60 m5 without motor-plan. I have had my motor replaced as well as my gearbox at a combined value of R500,000. luckily it was covered by plan. Some may argue that I am one of the unlucky ones but I know for a fact that lots of people have had issues in the past with these engines.

The reality is that u buy an M car to hammer it and if ur not going to drive it that way, buy something else. Whichever M car u decide to get just make sure u have enough mplan to drive it the way God intended.... :ty:

I have personally seen a full exhaust, software, pulley and intake M3 take down a few V10's.

Wish I wasn't scared of my MP being cancelled I would do the same to mine.

Guys, I have to admit that all the advice given here has been very eye opening and very insightful. I have been reading each comment with vested interest regarding this decision, and I have to admit that there is quite a contrast between some of the comments, especially from current and ex owners.

The one thing that does strike me is that having owned a few M cars, all of them spiritedly, the softness, or perceived softness of the M5 is something I find quote concerning. The one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that it is just a spectacular motorcar that is a true legend, but that comes at a severe cost IF something goes wrong, and judging by some of the comments, it would seem that this is inevitable, so a case of when, not if.
Also the lack of them under MP is something that worries me, as we have seen with the post about the M5 with the busted bearings that guys are saying is going to cost over R100k (and some mentioning R250k+) and even though there are one or two low mileage examples on Autotrader, even then we are looking at models that are at the end of their MP extension times.

Having seen all of this, I think the wisest option would be to hang on to my M3 for now, and potentially look at the F10 rather towards the end of this year or middle of next year. As much as I think that the V10 is one of the most unbelievable cars BMW has made, I don't think it is worth the financial risk should something go wrong, and as someone pointed out, getting an aftermarket warranty seems nigh on impossible to get.

To the guys that have the V10 M5 and have had nothing but joy with them,I do seriously envy you and still harbour hopes of at least one day taking one of these monsters on a spirited drive. In the meantime, I think I am going to stick to little brother for now!!

Again, thanks to each and every one of you for your input!
