Hi!

For preventative maintenance, now should be an ideal time for you... Mine basically started loosing tension at around 130k km.

My wife’s F30 is on 102000km a d we also need to think about it at some stage but have no idea when to do it.

We did the ZF gear oil service though.

Please share if you know of some one in the East Rand that can do it and the costs associated.

I have two mates with N20 motors that experienced this failure at 105 and 110000.

I don't know if that sample of two helps at all but combined with the experiences of others, it will give you a ballpark mileage. I see places recommending these are done just prior to 100000km.

Your mileage will (literally) vary... but it will definitely have to be done at some point. If I had a car with an N20 motor it would already have been changed by 125000km.

I find it interesting that there are so many motors (not just BMW) where the timing chains have become 'replacement' items. Used to be a big plus to have a chain over a belt due to reduced risk of catastrophic failure and less maintenance (or rather no real maintenance until you needed to rebuild the motor).

Thanks Llew. Can your mates share the estimated costs of the replacement parts and labour please.

I have seen this failure happen on a car with 85000km.

There was also more damaged internally to the crank which had to be replaced as well. Total for that bill was 30k
