Hey guys, My car started doing this yesterday, then it went away and now its back again. I don't feel any dip in performance. Any ideas?

mine usually does this when it's low on oil :nonono: or on a cold start. Cold start will usually go away once the oil has has a chance to circulate properly, and if oil is low, then it hangs around. :=):

I just checked the oil, its about 3/4 way up the last piece of plastic. I guess that's pretty low (and the car is still warm)

I'll be doing a complete oil change soon then. I think tomorrow is going to be a great day for an oil change

 always a good idea to keep the oil fresh  I find that as long as you are half way between the two grooves on the stick, you should be ok.

An oil change is always a good idea :)
Does the ticking go away when you rev the car at all?

Could be your lifters...
Does the ticking go away when the car is warm, or all the time?

After reading some DIY's I realised I'm not equipped to change the oil yet, so I went to the petrol station and bought 2 pints of the homebrew stuff :fencelook:

If you rev the car up slowly you can hear the ticking get faster with the rev's then after a while the engine gets too loud and i'm not sure if its gone or just drowned out.

It did it randomly like that, there was no in between volume, just no noise then loud ticking. It isn't doing it now but that might be because of the oil i put in?

Don't give up hope :)
I see you're in Cape Town - I'm more than happy to help you change your oil, and the oil filter.

It's a pretty quick job!

Anyway, oil is where I'd start first off. Could be your lifters too. Might also be VANOS, but hope it isn't!

It hasn't started up again since the oil top up but i'd like to change the oil anyway.. Maybe next month when i have more money. I just put 2 new tires on and had the rims fixed.

Is this dangerous in anyway?

Not as long as you keep topping up the oil...

I can speak for my self and another buddy on the forum. My 28 made an Embarrassing and annoying ticking sound. At first I thought it was my lifters. But hey, after choosing the correct oil as it was due for an oil change and service, it did the trick. At first after the change it was still there, even louder, but then decided to take it through its pacers. I realized that it enjoyed being bliksemed. Right Zabbo?

I dread asking this question because of all the debates here about it, but what oil did you use?

You need an oil filter - it sits under the round housing on the front right of the engine when seen from the front of the car. You need 6.5 litres of oil , check if you can get 500 ml or 1 litre containers , then you do not need 2 five litre cans .
Oil filter about R140 from agents , oil R600 for 10 litres
Shell helix ultra fully sinthetic
