lol i thought you were going to ask about putting some subs in the boot

your rear pads could be low and moving in the calliper when you reverse and apply the brakes... try see if the noise only comes when you brake in reverse...

if it does only come when you brake then next time you reverse you should try stopping with the hand brake... if there is no noise with the hand brake and a noise when you use the foot brake then its definitely the pads :)

Might it not also be the shock tower rubbers thats giving a problem??
I remember my E46 did the same, a thumbing sound from back, and it turned out to be that. :dunno:

Does this get this way with the pads wearing thin or is there something else that needs to be addressed?

Cos I suspected my pads as I have this noise on the front. Pads are due soon.

abmi0000 its caused by the pads wearing unevenly because they are normally used while going forward...

when you use them in reverse they move in the caliper because of the wear...

you can check the guide pins to make sure they smooth but i really dont think its a problem...

Sounds like a cheap broken car though. You referring to the pins that go through the pads? As in worn down?

agree its a very nasty sound and people look at you funny :yuck:

part number 6 and 4:

if they look warn then they could be causing excess uneven wear... if they in good condition then the pad should only stat making this noise when its almost done so then you know its time to replace...

Will let you guys know if the noise goes with the replacement.

By the way, I have like 4200km left on the front according to the on board. Will I be able to reset if the sensor hasn't triggered as yet since I need to sort the vibration on the discs out and the front pads are taking forever to get finished.

Yeah yeah, I am prepared to sacrifice some pad... :=):

the e60 tells you how much pad you have left?

its normally the rear pads that make this noise though...

Umm yeah, they do. I definately have a noise when I lightly tap on the brake and then it isn't there again if you try and simulate immediately thereafter.

try stop the car with the hand brake next time... should be no noise if its the pads...

dont know how the sensors work on the e60 they seem a bit more advanced than the e46

With the E90 it seems to be a known issues on some cars. You brake when going forward after having to brake while reversing, like in parking lot etc, and you get this thump sound. It's an annoying and embarrassing noise in most cases. It's usually (or so I understand it) the slight amount of play in the calliper that allows the pads to shift in the forward and then reverse directions. So with older worn pads this also makes sense.

I seen on some car programs that guys actually layer the outside of the pad with copper grease to eradic this. Anyone ever try it?

resetting e60 sensor

seems the e60 has two sensors one for when the pad is finished and the other for measuring how much pad is left :)

Read the whole thread but didn't get a definitive answer as to whether it can be reset beforehand, unless I missed something :dunno:

Copper grease or copper slip as it's often referred to is a must for preventing wear and for that matter brake squeal.

I know it as copper grease Philip :dunno:

The same stuff that TWT uses for the hub and wheel threads.

Just Googled - definately copper grease from what I have seen. There are other forums that make mention of using this on the pad too
