Thoughts on wife mobile/baby transporter

Hey Guys

Having recently had our Baby, and being a car guy i was driving my family home from the clinic, doing that first drive with the little one when i naturally started realizing how much more aware of the little ones safety in the car. So it got me thinking of my wife’s car.

She drives a 2016 Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost from new. It only has 83 000km on the clock, still smells new, and is immaculate on the inside.
So its a great car, great drive, still amazing condition. But it is a small hatch.

While i was having my X3's aircon regassed, a lady pulled into the workshop in a very clean C-class. I started chatting to the mechanic who started giving me some info on the car. It is owned by a female doctor, a 2010 350 Cdi that if any small thing comes up, she has it taken to the workshop and repaired.
It only has 109000km on the clock. Last year she thought of selling it as they 2 other new Benz's and we buy cars offered her 85k ( how ridiculous) sho she decided to keep her.

So it got me thinking of giving an offer on the car.
Now this is the tough part. What are your gusy thoughts?

2016 Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost, 82 000km owned from new
or let it got for a
2010 Mercedes C-class 350 Cdi 109000km full service history

It would be so hard to let go of the Fiesta as we have owned it from new, but the older but bigger car offers so much more space and of course for Dad... performance too.

What’s your guys thoughts on new but smaller vs older but bigger and better but same value, so no extra payment any where?

Hi,

Congratulations on the little one👏

The issue with an older premium/luxury car is that no matter how well maintained it may be, there is always a risk of it breaking down compared to a newer car, in general.

If your wife is driving alone with the little one, it would be best to give her the newer car.

There are those that may question the reliability of the 1.0 EcoBoost vs the 3.0 CDI. But, if the Ford has treated you well and you have a good history with it so far, then maybe it is worth keeping.

Also, ask your wife if she prefers a high riding/commanding view of the road. If yes, then a crossover/SUV may be be the better choice.

Congrats on the baby.

I would suggest using the x3 to transport the little one. Use the fiesta as a run around when either one of you are driving alone. There’s no better car than a paid off car.

Thank me in a few years when private schooling kicks in and or the second child arrives.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, its been amazing so far.

Yeah so one option is my wife would take my car which is the X3. (Not easy as im so protective over it, try keep the mileage low, only i hand wash it, and touch up on hybrid ceramic wax every two months etc)

So also my thought being if my Wife did take the X3, then at least if we had the Merc my daily would bee a car with decent power and german engineering and size etc (hence considering the 350 cdi)

Payment wise, the Fiesta is paid off (i also believe in having at least one paid off car in your possession), and i would only do this if the lady agreed to sell the Merc at a decent price (same value as the Fiesta) so if this was the case, there would be no change in debt or payments.

The Fiesta has never skipped a beat, ever. And we look after our cars, so it still smells new. I put any takeaways in a sealed bin not to put odour in the car. So yeah... would be a tough one.

Well i haven't received any calls so either the mechanics never gave the lady my number, or she isn't interesting in selling.

Congrats on the future petrol-head 🍼

If the lady is willing to let it go at a decent price, take the 350 for yourself and give the X3 to the wife.. and kid

Obvious answer is to give the wife the X3 and use the Fiesta yourself. That way the X3 gets paid off - it's not really a car worth keeping miles low on and is designed for heavy use - whatever car you have the kid in, be ready for piss/shit/vomit/snot to hot half the surfaces - don't be too precious. If that happening in your X3 hurts you, then maybe consider getting another SUV thing for the kid+wife.

Having done this, there are literally no sub R500k cars that will work with a small kid. (new anyway).

Prepare for projectile poop 💩 and vomit 🤮 in your cars at least for 1st 2 years.

Keep sanitizer spray and enough wet wipes and nappy/vomit packets onboard.

Car perfume is also a must.

Wife needs the biggest (tallest) car, so agree with giving her the X3.

I told my wife about your experience of having projectile vomit land on your speaker grill all the way on your dash... i would have died.
I idea of buying panel van solely for baby transportation is still appealing to me lol.

However nice that C-class is, 'n platkar just doesn't work for a mom. There's the babyseat, pram, bags and all the accompanying paraphernalia that constantly has to loaded / unloaded etc.
Having done this, there are literally no sub R500k cars that will work with a small kid. (new anyway).

There's a special on the new CX-5 for R470k 👀

I get triggered if the rear floor mats get a foot print... never mind any of the above foreign body substances lol

hmmm on the same front, im proud that the cloth seats on the Fiesta are spotless. I guess it would be better to have Baby on the leather that can be easily wiped, rather than cloth that absorbs and stains.

A bit to think about.

Lets see... if the lady calls me then its meant to be, and if not, then we will leave it as is.

The goal here is no financial change. So this would only be considered if the C class would be offered to me at a decent price.
That is a great special on the CX-5 though.

It's actually not that bad.
If you wipe stuff away quickly enough, it won't stain.

Haha, Our baby is 6weeks old, myself, my partner and my mom have all been sharted on at least once. LMAO, you get over it.
Suffice is to say that my child is probably 10-15yrs away from getting into my own car.
You need to put the little one in the GT4. Come on, be a nice dad 😁

Congrats on the new arrival. May there be many joyous years ahead.

I am going to give you my 1st hand experience when my little ones came along.

The C Class is just not going to cut it when it comes to space that's needed and, no not only the car seat bud, but also all the add ons that need to go into the boot.

I 'upgraded ' from our C Class into an ML just for the added space that was needed. Then i got into a Honda CRV after that just because we got used to having the space even when the kids grew up.

When i had my Cclass, all we could into that boot was a pram and a bag at most. So quick stop at the shop was a no no.

Consider your next vehicle carefully. Kids need space and they mess easily too.

Cheers.
