The other side of the fence... 330d content

Hi Guys

It kinda feels stalker-ish, but I registered about a week ago and have been watching and observing. I had a good look through many of the current threads... Seems to be pretty chilled and helpful up here. Anyway, I thought it's time to introduce myself!

First off, I must add that I'm a car nut, so standard or "stock" is not something that sits well for me. Im always looking for ways to add a classy individual touch to my rides.

My last 3 cars have all been VAG's, each keeping me entertained for about 2 years. I started off with a Golf 5 GTI - a fantastic car for its time and uber-fun with a K04 bolted on! That car got me into drag racing, and I ran a best of 13.5@175 on street tyres at Tarlton.

Next up was arguably the best looking car I've owned - a sleek little Audi TTS quattro! She really was a beaut and I think I need to share some pics with you guys at some point to show you what I get up to! I ran a respectable 12.9 @ 175 with this lady.

I then moved onto a car that was undoubtedly the most fun car I have had the pleasure of driving in... This was a car that you instantly felt connected to - call it love at first drive. I'm clearly not over my ex-... She will forever be the VW Scirocco that all future cars will be compared to. This little missy was built with 400m in mind, but she shamed many a car till speeds way in excess of twice the national highway limit... On the 400m we managed a best of 12.3@185, both in Nov 2014 and again in Sep 2015... Consistency ftw!

Last and certainly not least, my new steed is not of racing heritage, but it will certainly hold its own in time to come. I got myself an F30 330d, as my outlook has shifted from chasing down the track to just enjoying a comfy, yet exhilarating ride. Of course, things will change with this car in the not too distant future, so please check in every now and then and let me know what you think... Im definitely looking forward to this project...

Let me leave you with some pics...

Nice intro man! Welcome!! :praise:

The TTS is a nice car honestly.. Worlds apart from the 330d but the torque must be fun! I dig the lip on your car, is it carbon? :cartel:

Thanks guys...

No, the front lip is plastic and sprayed gloss black... But I think I'm going to do some matt silver work on this car, as I did with the TTS and my Rocc...

There's a lot of gloss/matt black and carbon running around, but I haven't yet come across something resembling the Audi Matt Aluminium pack on a BMW. Need to plan it properly but I think it could work....

Hmm yeah I hear you.. The brushed aluminium look could be very unique but will be tough to achieve! Keen to see what you come up with! :chef:

I like the lip.. looks great!

Matt aluminum lip on my previous TTS... I just need to figure out how to best make this work with the F30 front lip.

It also means that I need to re-do the side mirrors matt aluminium rather than gloss black as they are currently... Hmmm....

Welcome to the Familia
I too moved from Vags having had the Gti 5 and 6 but I stayed with petrol and moved to a F30 335. Mine has the MPerf Aero kit with my personal touches.

Congrats and many happy miles and have fun with your build

Nice intro and history.

I think you will have as much fun if not more, in the 330d. Its a perfect all rounder and once the modifications are made available, its going to be a force to reckon with.

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Thanks gents... Definitely feel out of my comfort zone firstly coz I'm mostly new to the world of BMW's but also with the world of diesels!

So lots of homework will be done... Especially regarding fuel quality, octane boosters, etc. Hoping to get to play with a JBD unit for this car in the near future... Haven't seen too much info on this so will share as I go along...

For the next month or so, car is likely to remain as is. The Feb paycheck is likely to be destroyed on the car though :D

Also, had to take care of my first de-mod!

I bought the car with H&R springs on, but my route to work (all of 6km) has 19 speed bumps which was a pain for the first two days of ownership. So I had to have to stock springs installed again.

Although it only raises the car by about 2cm or so, it really does help. Also, the spring rate on the blue H&R is pretty soft - I suspect very similar to the stock springs. So hitting bumps and dips in the road would see the front spoiler touching the tarmac pretty easily.

This is a pic of just how low the front spoiler was... My Rocc also had H&R springs and already sat lower than most cars... The front on the 330d was about 3-4cm lower!

So a couple of updates...

Firstly, stock power figures...

Attended a dyno day in Dec 2015. The following is what I got at the CPI dyno in Jhb.

ccccfbd331a848ca777a54e37f746e2e.jpg

That's 178wkw and 538Nm torque.

Pretty happy with those figures for stock. From what the guys were telling me, this dyno should be comparable to KAR. If it is, great...

Also, as I posted in one of the other threads... I made a trip down the PMB from JHB between Xmas and new year. Driving at the speed limit, I managed 4.9l/100km down and 5.3l/100km back up to Jhb.

Car seems to be pretty healthy!

The boot spoiler on my car is colour coded white, which sort of hides the fact that it's even there...

Seeing that my front spoiler, side mirrors and interior trim is gloss black, I decided to match the boot spoiler to that. It seemed easier to have it wrapped than sprayed, so I called Kuvi from VPS Randburg on Friday, and even though he wasn't planning to open the shop on Saturday, he told me to come in.

While at it, I wanted to have the roof wrapped gloss black too...

Before...

Boot spoiler completed...

And the roof and aerial, very neatly done...

A big shout out to Kuvi@VPS Randburg... He's an absolute gentleman, and his work is fantastic! He also doesn't just let his guys do the work... He gets his hands dirty and was busy with some intricate work on the roof beadings while his guys took care of the roof wrap.

The wrap was excellent value for money! I'm absolutely loving the look! :)

Nice mods,

Quick Q, what gear was the dyno done in? Depending on the gearbox i would expect 5th or 6th?

Thanks... Judging by the speed, I'm guessing that it was done in 4th gear...

I actually want to re-do and compare runs in both 4th and 5th gears.
