Spent some time yesterday and installed 2 items into the car.

1. Android radio
2. Dashcam that connects to the Android radio. This allows to view videos on the radio and possibly more, but haven't tested yet.

First part is always to remove the trim and the old radio, and do some cleaning. Except I was really surprised how little dirt there was on this car compared to my own. I still got the hand vacuum out for the carpet there and a microfibre cloth for the dust on the plastic bits.

Then I moved over the bits from the old bracket to the new relocation bracket for the climate controls:

You do need a T20 torx screw driver, so here is my little chinese set for small things. The socket wrench set also have a T20 which I needed later.

This is where I needed the socket set's T20, because the chinese set couldn't remove the screw for the A-pillar. This was surprisingly a lot more tiring that I expected.

One more small thing to remove to pull wiring through:

So the wife wanted the silver trim as is, and here the radio is installed:

But, I found this trim and the current trim use different connectors on the door strips, and so I had to put the wood trim back:

I was very impressed with the wood trim. Not all of it is plastic, in fact it is metal in the inside on some parts. Definitely better quality items, but also slightly heavier:

Dash cam installed:

This is how it looks on the radio. Silver trim still on here, because I looked at the image on the radio while putting on the window.

So far I am impressed with the dash cam. Still need to buy the sdcard for it, so for now its not recording yet. This car mounts in the dash cam itself, so the radio is only for viewing if you too lazy to take out the sdcard.

Hope you all enjoyed reading this post

Nice install,

Where about did you purchase the aircon relocation bracket?
If BMW agent, what’s the price and part number, I need for my cars

Price is quite expensive, but I see it as a double whammy. Relocation and making it look new again.

Bought from SMG Cape Town in Century City.

I also bought 2x BMW LL-01 engine oil which is why the credit card slip is showing higher price.

This is enough to make me :blueCry:

Wife was on her way back home after doing shopping while I was looking after the baby at home.

When I received a call I knew something happened.

Never wanted to see this:

The damage:

Not sure how fixable this is, the shown part of the unibody looks pretty damaged

She was just driving down Eversdal, when a guy couldn't wait to get out of the complex driveway, and drove in to her.

For some reason the last part of the dashcam video is corrupted.

:blueCry: man this one hurts, Atleast the wife is fine.

Unfortunately that doesn't look like it can be repaired easily... Which also hurts after all that you have put in.

:sorry:

:blueCry: sorry to hear bud,

IMO it is fixable. I don't think it would end up costing too much (relatively speaking), second hand parts would be a good option.

I wouldn't even try with insurance since they will most likely write the car off.

I think the way it stands, even if I don't fix it, I am not letting the insurance take it. The parts from the car alone is worth more than what they will give me. So will see what I can do.

OUCH!

So sorry to see this bud but the most important thing, is the SO is fine. Its exactly my greatest fear with the E46's, we have past that point of insured value and any further spending is into a black whole, for this exact reason. Insurance will most likely write the car off, so agree that you are better off fixing it yourself..

But then again, what is the point of comprehensive insurance on these cars, probably makes more sense to insure for 3rd party, fire and theft? Hope you get her back on the road, lots of time and attention put in!

Sorry buddy :blueCry:

This is heartbreaking after all the work put into this car.

Definitely will be an insurance write off, rather fix on your own if funds allow.

This time I have some experience behind me, so far busy negotiating with insurance on getting a payout so I can fix myself. I suspect they will do up to R30k - excess (R3k I think), which I should get back once they get money from the other driver's insurance.

The repairshop I phoned and is happy to go cut out the part of the body I need from another place where there is a body and I have a fanatic who is helping me out with that. Then its just another rear left door and the car should be fixed. Its mostly laboar work. I think the suspension is fine, but will deal with that if its an issue. Wheel looks straight, so if not, it should be a minor difference that I can hopefully make a plan with.

Have a confession on video from other driver, ID#s, it happened at his house so have that address and I know their insurance is Santam. So I got good leads for the insurance to follow up on. I really feel this guy should be charged with reckless driving. Wife had right of way and this guy was trying to leave the entrance/exit to Stellenberg Gardens complex.

Too bad no cop showed up to the accident, otherwise I would request they take him for blood tests. He only wanted to quickly go buy smokes, so who knows if he was on edge for that or not.

not something lekker to go through,

Especially when You look so well after you cars. and spare no expense on maintenance.

in all honesty, that kind of reliability is Irreplaceable..

even if insurance pays you out, you can buy NOTHING as reliable as your car.

So you got a good plan. Keep it, And get her going again. She just has a broken Hip bone. That can be replaced/Repaired

sorry about the damage man, but don't stress. It's fixable- a second hand door and that rear panel can be cut away and a new one neatly welded into place you'll never know its crashed. A skilled panel beater is all you need, and there's plenty around
Soon she'll be back on the road going places:thumbs:

Not a difficult repair and neither a long one

Pull the damaged area
Drill the spot welds
Peel the damaged panel
Panel beat the inner pieces straight

get the donor parts drilled and peeled
Weld the pieces
Seal
Primer
Paint

Roughly R20k in CTN and R30k in JHB.

Glad your wife was not hurt.
