The ominous signs of the end of times (for the 323i, that is)

ask them for a N55, tell them you'll pay in the difference ;)

but on a more serious note im glad it seems to be working out....

Delivery of the motor took 14 working days, and installation was one day. you should ask what is the delivery period. As for the N55, I tried that, it was a no go

That's awesome news! Have they given any explanation regarding the old engine's problems and so on? Is the new motor a simple replacement of the original engine or a more updated variant? Also since your motorplan is almost at the end, is there any warranty on the newly fitted engine?

Hope you get your car back soon! I'm sure you have been missing her! :=):

Ok here is the situation:

As I've mentioned in the first post, the car had/has a smoking problem and needed to be looked at. first visit to Auto Atlantic for this problem resulted in the PCV being replaced. This, unfortunately, did not solve the problem.

On my return visit, they had a look at it, did some tests and then told me two days later to come fetch the car - there's nothing wrong with it! Needless to say, I smelled a rat!

I then looked at the jobcard, and then realised that they did a compression and cylinder leakage tests. Both of which the poor engine failed. Cylinder 5 clocked out at 11.5Bar while the rest was at 14.5Bar. Cylinders 5 and 6 were leaking at a rate of 25 and 23% respectively.

Question: is this normal? According to Gareth (whoever you are), it is.

According to BMW's training material on engine troubleshooting, no BMW can have >10% compression difference, and a >8% leakage rate.

So I took it in again Thursday 11 August 2011 and now I sit without a car.

Okay, so it all came to an end. A good end, I think.

The engine was installed and I have received my car back today. It drives fine and I kinda feel a small wee bit more power, but maybe it's the placebo effect. (Or the power difference from driving that 118i for a week!)

The engine installation was done neat and I cannot complain.

I have a brand new N52B25OL and a 2 year warranty on the engine.

Thanks for everyone who followed this thread and gave their positive inputs and comments.

Oh ja, problem on the old motor: bore clearances were all measured out of specification! How's that for a surprise?

Now the question is why? Why was it out of spec? Will they be conducting test on the old engine? Wonder if there is any chance of getting report of such a tests.

That's interesting! First of all very glad to hear that you got your car back with a shiny new engine! :bravo:

Old engine bore clearances out of spec, does that mean from a manufacturing defect or premature wear somehow?

Please keep us updated on how the new engine behaves!

Well then there must be a problem with the Manufacturing process:thumbdo: I will not buy another BMW untill they sorted this oil cunsumtion problem out. How can my E46 325i use no oil and and e90 does and I also use castrol SLX 5W30. Ill rather buy a nother E46:thumbs:

Exactly. My E46 325i used absolutely no oil between services.

Well, we'll see how much oil the new engine uses. I assume it will be less.

What I am curious to know, since many of these engines are used in the other BMW series models, are they also using oil? Is this limited to or mostly on the earlier E90 engines? Of course not having a proper physical dipstick annoys me because a) I don't like having to trust electronics for something this crucial, and b) not being able to carefully "top-up" as frequently as maybe required but instead having to wait until a full 1 ltr of oil is used and then indicated to add!
