THE N/A vs TURBO ENGINE DEBATE

The only boosted car I will own will be a diesel. I want nothing to do with modern bmws as they truly lost the plot in all aspects. I cannot own a car built by an accountant, sorry.

I'm an accountant! I certainly wouldn't buy a car I built either:=):
But I agree with you, and also the turbos vs NA. The newer BMW have become too soft (without the options of more of drivers car, less comfort more feeling) and they are trying to be an "all in one" car. I don't believe in one car for all occasions. The engineers skills on a high revving NA engine I find amazing. The turbo's cars are more like IT for me - amazing tech/efficient/better consumption/more power etc etc, [/b]BUT has no soul.
Guess I'm getting old and don't want to "stick" with the times!

I agree with you 100% there. Back in the day hearing a 325i, 330i start and idle was amazing. The sound and feel was really great, but now one gets that out of a 335i/340i.

100%....:clapper:
My first car ever was a e30 325 I. ......
My opinion was and probably still is one of the best sounding straight six engine ever.....
Especially if it was fitted with a nice double 75mm free flow

Most people when looking to buy a car, look at 3 basic conditions.
1. Practicality
2. Efficiency
3. Performance

Head to head for the above, NA cars will loose every singly time when competing with boosted cars. If you comparing the sound that a NA car makes to boosted, well that would just be down to opinion.

Also remember that the n54 and n55 motors would not have been ranked on the top 3 best engine category since 2008 if they were crap motors. BMW are still building enjoyable fun cars with smooth power delivery.

And calling other manufactures crap is a bold statement.
I`ll just leave this here....BEARING FAILURE

Wasn't needed Yuben, just seeing so many Toyota engine swap bmws for sale got me on the subject.

Maybe the reason for so many Toyota/Lexus engine swops is because

1. these engines are more readily available compared to BMW engines.
2.these engines are cheaper to get and install than BMW engines.
3. the reliability factor of these engines.
4. the sound and performance of a V8 instead of getting a replacement 318i or 320d or whatever engine.

I tell you now, even I would consider a Lexus V8 transplant if my 325i motor were to fail.
That said, the car would remain mine and be used a sleeper or track toy.

Well it would need to become a track car as you would have lost your traction control, cruise control, power steering, air conditioning, abs brakes and fuel economy in the process of fitting an engine that doesn't belong.

Indeed :blueCry:

What it would become is a drag car because you cannot use it for anything else. The handling will be terrible from the change in weight bias and because you have zero safety devices it would be downright dangerous to drive fast around bends.:bin:

With you on this, hard to beat the sound of an M20......:blowheart:

You are forgetting one thing...

I am a spietkop, and thus I am able to drive anything better that Michael Schumacher :mmm:

To my knowledge this problem is not specific to South Africa, So all over the world BMWs run bearing because the fuel is shit?

One would think that good engineering would cater for these needs(shit fuel) or tried to stop it happening for over a decade. :coolShake:

Detonation from poor quality fuel destroys bearings with tighter tolerances like that found in S54 and S65 motors.

Oh wait I need to correct myself, BMW engineers have catered to the bearing issue with their Boosted cars

Also Read this: http://www.substech.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=engine_bearing_failure

I quote:

The causes of engine bearing fatigue:
◾Wrong selection of the Engine bearing materials for the application.
◾Localized loading of the bearing due to a misalignment (eg. hour glass journal, distorted connecting rod).
◾Fuel detonation caused by advanced ignition.
◾Running the engine under high loads (torque) at low rotation speeds for long period.
◾Poor conforming of the bearing back with the housing surface.
◾Over fueling.
◾Corrosive action of contaminated oil, which lowers the fatigue limit (Corrosion fatigue).

That's a possible cause, not THE cause. Anything is speculation at this point. Based on research done by much more clever guys than us, it's compounded by many factors - not just one.
