A company as big as BMW has to move with the times to please the majority target market and conform to newer laws or risk the competition taking away their business, as much as I hate to admit it.

Eventually the purists of today will die out and future generations will not understand the concept of older technology being preferred over the current norm.

I'm pretty sure men in the 50's also complained of how vehicle technology was moving forward in a way they couldn't agree with. Can you honestly look back and say you'd prefer a standard family sedan of the 50's over your current 3 series, 5 series or 7 series?

But that is exactly what happens to any car, by any manufacturer, as technology improves. Every new model reduces NVH (standard car industry stuff - noise, vibration and harshness) by a measurable degree in order to remain competitive.

Yes, it makes things like M cars lose a bit of appeal to purists, but even a Ferrari 488 has lost some rawness compared to a 430, or even a 458.

They're all doing it. It's called progress.

It is how the world is going... and I am quite excited about it. As battery tech and control systems improve electric cars are going to be epic.

Imagine being able to control exactly the power going to each wheel. No heavy drive trains. Almost all the torque available from 0 rpm.

I have a few brushless lipo RC cars and if that performance can be translated to real cars!!!

Also the layout of a car is very restricted by all the engine and drive train stuff.

4x4s will become epic epic.

but we are some way off all electric cars and hybrids are the current feasible option.

All the manufacturers are going this way because Germany has passed legislation that new cars must be all electric by 2030.

Well, the character has certainly changed with the use of turbocharging. Some of the gains are at the expensive of other things. As a purist stuck in the past, I also prefer the older NA M cars.

I guess the definition of an M car is not a constant. It evolves over time as things change. I still prefer the older recipe.

Sure, different people like different things. But to say that "different" = "glorified 335i" is ridiculously wrong. So much more to an ///M car than just ONE aspect of an engine, or even the engine itself. The ///M recipe is many things working together, This is proven by the fact that currently many people are calling the ///M2 the best ///M car on sale, and it doesn't even have an S engine.

I guess I'm also stuck in the past on this one. I'm still on the fence on the newer turbo cars, as some of them are really good as drivers cars. In some strange way, I'm also fine with the hybrids too.

However, one constant, up until now, which will be changing is the removal of the internal combustion engine. Yes, yes, it's progress - old timers (like me), get over it.

However, performance, consumption, opinions aside, would be a sad day when a M car no longer has a real and natural sounding engine or exhaust note to go with it. Some would argue it's already happened to an extent with the sound generators in newer cars, but reality hits home when the engine is truly gone. It's almost like saying fake boo.... never mind, that analogy might get me into trouble.

The 335i is a true future legend. In years to come the N54 motor is going to become the next 2JZ:cartel:

Electric cars are going to be faster accelerating, and very well controlled, due to each wheel motor being individually controlled. Braking and traction control will also be much more advanced due to the electronic control offered.

BUT

Will it give the aural excitement of a high revving internal combustion engine? Intake noise and exhaust roar? Spine tingling idle, and cold start exhaust note will be gone.

Will the electric M cars give us something to wake up early on a Sunday morning.... Or will they be like roller coasters (handling like on rails )with the whine of electric motors?

The Petrolhead will be replaced by the electronhead

That's it - my point is based on the demise of the combustion engine altogether. Not meant to start a debate on the current turbo cars.

I see the electric car as saving us from accidently getting in to 3 cyclinder 1.1l econo torture chambers.
You can always go.for a drive in a NA V8. Just buy one.
